What type of winches are you guys running? Do you think an M8000 with snatch block would be fine?

I've got a warn xd9000. Recently respooled with 18k# rope. Hasn't let me down yet.

 

Thats what I want to get, but its almost double of the m8000

 

I've always been told a suitable winch should be rated at least be twice the weight of whatever you're putting it on. My truck, DCSB, weighs 4880 with my front/rear bumpers and sliders. So I'm a tad over that threshold.

A LOT of people run the m8000 as it's a very tried and true winch. It's the winch I was going to purchase, but Das Mule gave me way too good of a deal on the TJM Stealth 9000 to pass up. As @bobsuruncle said, 2 to 1 is a generally accepted rule of thumb (2x Vehicle Weight to 1x Winch Pull Capacity) however, I keep seeing people using 1.5:1 as well as 1.3:1 in more modern reviews. I don't know the logic behind this, and I don't think it's acceptable for a vehicle that has any chance of ever getting stuck in the mud.

As for your questions...
I am running a TJM Stealth 9000. My vehicle when loaded down weight quite a bit more than 4500lbs. Closer to 5700lbs.

An M8000 with a snatch block is more than enough for a Tacoma that's always going to be stuck in a situation where you have 2x the line length you need. (I think I have been in that situation once.)

If the M8000 is the top of your WARN budget, and you're dead set on WARN, be sure to purchase a winch line extension just in case, though this will likely have you nearing a heavier winch in price.

Or you could keep an eye on craigslist... Here's an example of what appears to be a nice winch for $800... Fairing is a little rough, but that's to be expected on a winch that's used.

Thanks that really helps, I'm not set on anything or a price point yet. Just wasn't sure if the double in cost is worth it. I'll take a look into the TJM.

 

@Greddy and I got our reroutes done this morning. Wayne is a super nice guy and does good/quick work. $109.20 and took him just over an hour. Highly reccomend A1 muffler in Everett
