I just put a set of Cooper AT/w on the wife's T4R and they might be worth considering. Not aggressive, but a ton of siping which is what you want for the NE conditions anyways.

Lots of bolt on chrome stuff
I was searching for a winter in a bigger size too... then I gave up and put my 265s on for another season. I quickly learned that they're a lot of fun now that I'm geared and supercharged. With this amount of wheel spin I'll be back on the hunt next season though :burnrubber:

A small handful of select mods.
If you can't find large winter tires you could always sipe the MTR's. It will shorten their overall life but the grip is awesome on the ice.

Nokian makes some of the best winter tires IMHO and should be pretty easy to find in VT. They make them up to 315/70/17's.

was looking at the Yokohama Geolandar I/T G072 as it comes in a 315/75/16 offered through discount tire direct...

a lot of money no matter how big of a discount i can get...if all roads remained unplowed and full of powder i wouldn't have this dilemma

I am really happy with my st/max for winter driving. Gained a lot of confidence coming from the duratrac mtrs. Highway, city streets weather packed snow or what ever was fine. Also if the snow was super deep I had no problem either. I have a 255/85/16, so not sure if that makes much a difference in terms of weight distribution compared to a 315. Nonetheless coming from the 265 mtrs I was very impressed.

Also the tires are stud-able so they are a pretty winter geared all terrain.not sure how they compare price wise to what you've looked at but may be a good option.
