So if you dont work from heco….do you just cruise on tw till the shift is done?

and pv is good if you plan to own your house for a long ass time, but at this point heco gets free energy off you anyways and still turns around to sell it.

    Hahahaha good one.

The case against PV is far too long for one post. But to sum it up, the PV industry isn't standardized and long term reliability has not been established. The world is increasingly becoming more energy efficient like the trend from halogen to HID to CFL to LED. CRT TVs to plasma to LED etc. Aside from the lower crude oil costs, alternative energy solutions are growing like LNG, wind and solar which should result in lower energy costs. HECO will also improve their cost structure through technology like the smart grid and reduced labor costs. Based on a simple PV projection from 2 years ago, the cost to recoup your original investment is now 50% longer and that doesn't take the time value of money as if you had invested that money instead or the interest you will pay to fund the system. Now add all that to the fact that the average American owns their home for only 13 years many will never see their original investment in PV back.

I stand corrected, you work for NextEra.... lol.. or own a crap load of stock in one or the other.. lol....

To PV or not to PV.... up to the individual homeowner, but I pretty much already made my money back. Plus for me, it was either pay uncle sam or pay myself / my investment. I choose to pay myself..

Actually sold all my HECO after the merger was announced. Just sharing my thoughts. I'm glad your PV has paid off, it just never would've for me after I reviewed 3 different proposals.

I'm actually more interested in the guys saying their bills haven't changed in a year.

got 30some-odd panels on my place, when its sunny, the monthly bill is only $16, but some months its like regular 200+

it all depends on the "banked" surplus power we generate in the sunny months and start to burn through it when its dark, and I think the bank resets to 0 every year...so you have to spend the first few months building up the bank again.

where you live and the dwellings usage is a huge factor too...my place has 1-3 room AC's going at any given time plus everything else that's plugged in.

some of my coworkers are on that boat. install 15 panels, buy extra shit like 2 fridges and a chest freezer, run AC 24hrs/day, and wonder why the bill hasn't gone down

yup, I've been building a small credit every month without even being conservative about usage. then last month when it's all cloudy, muggy, and hot as fck, I rack up a $350 bill but after all the credits are applied, I pay $10. just sucks when you have leftover at the end of the year, cause you know your neighbor without PV is paying HECO for electricity that you probably supplied them for free.

Sorry brother...I didn't mean to start a political debate. But the savings and benefits of solar in HI are so overwhelming that it's made everyone question the monopoly that HECO has had over us for decades.

I'm not too sure who you got your 3 proposals from but they must not have been doing a good job of explaining the savings, taxes credits, added property value and escape of additional property taxes from the increase of property value.

All these properly calculated will = a 3-4 maybe a 5 year pay back period at today's HECO rates. Which makes the statement of 13 year average home ownership a smart investment by 9-11 years. But actual homeownership average is 7 years per Hawaii board of realtors.

And although the industry itself has only become popular in 2007. The technology itself has been around for decades. On top of that the federal government has required that the panel and inverter manufacturers hold an equal amount of $$$ in an escrow account to cover all possible warranty claims that could arise from the total of equipment that they've sold.

It's a no brainier at. 3-5 year payback and then some. I used to sell solar because I understood and still believe in its benefits. Even at a longer payback period, I'd rather make the investment than pay HECO.

As for me I have. 20 panel system being installed in the next 2-3 months. Immediately after my gras grows in ;)

And this shows an increase over the 1 year period not a decrease

    ^^^^bwaahahahahah

and about the pv thing, my parents wanted it a year or two ago but they dont live here in Kona enough to make it worth while. they said theyd be giving back to heco and have to pay for the system anyways.

i live off generator, usually about $20-60 a month max. But thats mostly running the air compressor for tools or to have lights on. If I could afford pv and batteries, id go that route.
