From a tax or voting perspective, whether you have your car registered in your previous state or in Hawaii, it does not change your chosen state of residency.

So the question to ask is it worth the money and effort to keep the car registered in your previous state (while also getting the Hawaii permit and safety inspection)? It's only $25 to register it here, and I doubt many of the other states have that cheap of a registration. All you have to do is get the non-resident military form from your unit personnel office and bring it in with safety inspection and insurance. It's surprisingly easy (but not online-only easy of course).

I have only talked with 2 people where I recommended they keep their out-of-state plates. One had recently updated their Texas plates only a month before they ended up shipping their cars, and that registration was good for 2 years. The other was already planning to retire after this assignment and they had plans to go right back to their house where the vehicle was registered and he didn't want to pay the initial fee to get new plates when he went back.

I guess there would be a good third reason to keep you out-of-state plates...if you have an awesome vanity plate!! :D

Dont' forget you have to have the obnoxious 4x6 blue decal to keep your old plates.

    LOL

I'm upset that the dealer put the safety inspection sticker on my bumper! I wanted it on one of those metal plates that stick out next to the license plate. I couldn't imagine how horrible it'd be to have that EVEN BIGGER sticker on my bumper as well.

West Virginia doesn’t require front license plates, so I don’t have to drill the front bumper. It’s worth the minimal fee I pay extra a year to not have that.

I only have to get an out of state permit one more time, then I'm done with this place

    You beat me to it...
With words like those, its begs the question, are the locals giving you a hard time for "no reason at all"?

I knew a bunch of dudes in the military that had the same attitude about Hawaii.

Not a good attitude to have... But then again, maybe that attitude is due to how he was treated while he was here... And if thats how he talks to the locals... Maybe "all is fair in love and war"

Yes, it's the same as how I didn't like NC at all when I was stationed at Ft Bragg. I tried to make the best of it, and even tried to do what the local guys from NC did for fun. Even though I thought it majorly sucked, I didn't let them know that because it's their hometown and they love it there.

I’m guessing you haven’t lived in many different states. If you’re thi upset about something as trivial as a license plate, you are gonna have a bad time anywhere.

Felt the same way about Jacksonville, North Carolina but I got over it and made the best out of it anyway.
