Always makes me think of the oysters... :p

Looks terrible! I feel for you, waiting so long and wanting them so bad. What a let down!

I think even my sketchy welds would be stronger. Doesn't even look like he believed the tube ends? And seems like the plate was only tacked on.. I can't even understand why it would be easier/stronger to do the plate first. And if he is cutting corners like that then why did it take so damn long..

Should be good once they are fixed. The tube looks quality, just the welds that are wrong.

I might have to take you up on that. You have a portable welder? I was actually thinking about buying a Miller multimatic 200 with the TIG contractor package.

Putting bilstein 5100's on the front at 1.75" tomorrow to level it out. Do I legally need recon for this? Im going to feel dumb driving around with a recon sticker with this setup but don't want to have problems when it comes time for safety. Im leaving the stock sport tires on for now until they wear down. Saving the Maxtrac lift for when the tires need to be replaced.

It's a gray area. Some safety inspectors will tell you need RECON because it's a lift, others will say its a stock replacement shock (as opposed to a true aftermarket coil over) and doesn't need to be inspected. I'd go for safety and see what they say. Don't even tell them, just see what they come up with on their own. I think you would pass safety.

    Weight limit?

technically, any alterations to the factory suspensions geometry will require recon. if you were to bring it in to get ssafety checked, the inspector may notice the lift/not factory shocks and tell you he cant pass you until you go and get recon. thats even with a small lift.

now, if you were to bring it in and the inspection station doesnt notice a 1.75" lift, and everything else looks good, you should pass. i personally dont have recon and havent been bothered for the 3 years i lived here

That sucks Iven, if he does all of them like this that is kinda F'd up. I would post the pics and his responses in his review thread. All sliders are fully welded, but it's not necessary for strength if the notches are done correctly. Tubing structures depend on the fit-up and design for strength, the welding is there to keep the pieces in place. There are a lot of roll cages that are not, and can not be fully welded, but they are made correctly and hold up to all the abuse you can throw at them. BTW, I'm not defending him because those look half-assed to me.

I might be welding some brackets on my neighbors Vanagon Sun. You want to try out an ESAB? :D

It's .120 wall tubing, there is no need to bevel unless you're using a 100 amp welder.

    Nice fit up, huh?
    IMG_1108.jpg

And yeah full bevel in not necessary in this case, but I'd rather bevel this a little and then TIG weld it nice and tight with a good cover pass.
This is the firepit I cut and formed at work with 1/8 304 plate. My buddy who welded my hoops is welding it for me. He's not a journeyman yet, but he can TIG pretty damn good.
