I recently purchased a used Professional OBD II & Can Scan Tool with the hopes of reading check engine codes. Evidently it is not as easy to use as I expected. Recently my warning light came on (triangle with exclamation point) and I wanted to try the OBD scan tool. The most I could get out of the exercise was "Modules Present"
ID: $07E9 Protocol: CAN STD FAST
and ID: $07E8 Protocol: CAN STD FAST ?

I am not really sure what these mean. Anyone have any suggestions where to begin finding out why I have a warning light based on this feedback? I am obviously a novice in using this tool. IMG_4355.HEIC.jpg

That Toolshed “professional” is only $70 brand new so it may not be the best to do what you’re wanting

I would say take it to your local parts house and have them scan it

Usually codes look like this. Can you select those for further details?

Generally to solve issues as a novice, you google P1234 Toyota Corolla for example and you get a forum of people who try to troubleshoot & solve. Or google solutions for P1234 etc.

As a mechanic they generally know what trips each code most frequently and can solve it rather quickly. If that doesn't work, they know what to check for next. Or the tech/friend knows.

I've solved many codes on my 06 corolla/many previous vehicles and replaced parts, gaskets, etc many times doing the novice method.

It's not easy or quick for novices, but saving $100 an hour is pretty sweet. Even if it takes you longer.

    Heres another example https://www.ericthecarguy.com/forums/topic/help-with-cel-please/

    Manual for your device https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/18/18a5181a-e1f0-432c-970e-07416658895a.pdf

Theres someone here who knows more than me, but I hope this helps start discussion. Best of luck!

Also try updating the unit itself. It should have a USB cable for your computer, then go to the web site and look for a software upgrade.

Also look on boob-tube for a video.

Also make sure the connector is fully seated into the under dash socket.
