Went to get my truck tuned with KDmax Pro the other night and despite his efforts @PNWTacoma couldn't get the OBD2 port to communicate with the ECU to flash it. He tried multiple cables, even a second laptop, but no dice. Not one to be defeated, I’m troubleshooting the OBD2 issue.

My OBD2 port is throwing back a no comms error when I scan it with my Launch CReader V+ tool. So far I’ve checked the 7.5A OBD fuse and it doesn’t look blown. I confirmed the port is getting 12V power from the battery on pin 16 and the grounds on both pins 4 and 5 check out fine. I tried taking the port out of the bracket and connecting it to the scanner but it still fails.

Short of heading to the dealer to have them look at it under warranty, what else should I check?

For context, my truck is a ‘19 OR DCLB and has about 10,200 miles on it. Due to the ‘Rona killing my commute, I’ve only needed to bring her to the dealer once for a 10k ToyotaCare service and oil change, and during the same visit they addressed the recall on the fuel pump. That’s it.

    Oh look, another mod....
You also have the option of purchasing and installing a Sprinter Booster. It does the exact same thing as the KDMax tune.

I haven’t heard of it, but if it’s like a pedal commander, I’m more interested in having the tune done. Thanks for the idea, though.

I need a functioning OBD2 port to pass DEQ in my state and to eventually hook up to my new maestro/head unit for data pass through. I’m just trying to see if there are any troubleshooting steps I can try before I have to hassle with a dealership.

    Wow!
    That’s news to me.
Did not know Sprint Booster could make all those changes. Very interesting!
Could have saved us a lot of work!!
    sprint booster does all this?
    -shifting
    -timing
    -rev limiter
    -ACIS valve
    -Throttle
    -torque converter
    -cruise control
    -air/fuel ratios
    -ignition
    -torque maps

    This is big news!!

If you have a spare fuse replace it anyway even though your current fuse may not look blown. Sometimes it's hard to tell from just looking at them.

I spoke to Paul, hope you get it figured out.
I have had one 7.5amp obd2 fuse that looked good, but I changed it anyway and it worked. Without power going through that fuse, it won’t work.
Also had another guy with rodent damage that had to get the dealership do a new harness.

FWIW, I have no skin in the KD Max game. In fact I don't even have one on my truck and have chosen not to get one. However, I would point out that a Sprint Booster or similar will only alter the throttle by wire signal so that your truck basically thinks you are pushing the pedal harder. An ECU tune touches multiple parameters controlled by that module, throttle tip-in being only one of them. To say that a Sprint Booster does the same as an ECU tune, be it KD Max, OVTune, CVC, etc. is inaccurate.

You're right. I misspoke. It doesn't do the exact same thing.

Didn't realize I ignited a shit storm by disrespecting the blessed KDMax Tuner people on this site.

Can we get back on topic now and fix the OP's problem?

No skin in the game either, have had a few different tunes on my two 3rd gens dating back to 2017... and have also tried my hand at modifying several tables within a stock calibration file in the pursuit of "better" driveability.
You did kinda ignite a shitstorm, not just with "the blessed KDMAX" though.
You told a falsehood, plain and simple.

Thanks! Paul went out of his way to help troubleshoot. I will swap out the 7.5 fuse and see if that fixes it. I’ll check the other fuses and see if there’s any others that are burnt out. Bit of a long shot, but I’ll check the easy stuff.

Otherwise, I’ll have to go to the dealer and see if they will swap out the harness. Everything is working as expected in the rig so either there’s a bad pin in the harness that’s not transmitting data or there’s a bad connection on the ECU end.

Welp, took the truck into Toyota today. 5 hours and $125 later the service advisor told me that the pins in the OBD2 port are damaged and it needs to be repinned. They’ll gladly do it for around $1000, parts and labor. Thanks but no thanks.

Looks like I’m repinning the harness myself. If anyone has any pointers, I’m all ears.

How does that happen? Did someone try to mash a reader or other tool onto it?

Finding the right depinning tool will help make it a breeze. Search the link for the pigtail for possible info to help narrow it down. Amazon has depinning tools.

If you’re able, I’d depin, crimp a new connector and insert into the new pigtail one wire at a time.

Use a proper crimping tool and crimping techniques.
