We so much used to do this...dial a random number and say "hello, I am looking for John" knowing the answer will be like "sorry, no one John here". After 7-8-9 calls, we would call back and say "this is John, has anybody been looking for me?"

FWIW most LEO ’s almost instinctively see that as a way to find out if you have a record, are wanted, or personal reasons should they want to trust you. I know many Sherrif’s, they are cool, but they will research even their friends, lol. It’s akin to hiding your social, just makes it more work so it’s harder for them (to an extent). Doesn’t matter because Snowden proved at a high security level we are all being watched from most media searches, from upper Government. Which is who people want to stay off the radar of, as if.. You can hide all you want by blurring the plates, if they want to find you they will, best to just lurk on the site and not sign up if anyone is worried that much.

or just don't get involved in "overthrow the government" type threads...

But this thread is not about preventing people with security clearances and law enforcement from getting at your info, but making it at least a little bit harder for your everyday normal hacker douche form getting more of your info by posting personal info on public, non-encrypted sites.

Then you read about organizations like banks or Target getting hacked and everyone's data disappearing and you kinda have to wonder why bother. Well, for me, it's just about controlling what *I* can control to a reasonable level.

Since my computer skills allow me to sometimes turn it on I would have no idea how to block my license plate in any case .

I can’t figure out if the plate says “jazz” or “jizz”. Better off blacking that one out.

Not sure if it's been mentioned or not.

But we've all been familiarized with the term "Swatting"?
You piss someone off on an online gaming match & all they have to have is your IP address... Then, depending on how bored or vindictive they are; you're going to have a bad time.

Too many people (even on this site), aren't getting laid /have too much time on their hands, staring glow-faced into a computer screen. Rather them not have my license plate number too..

Beneficial to use a VPN in this day & age.

An educated guess, but at least in CA, running a plate used to be fairly easy.

Pretty much any PI could run a plate and get necessary info. CA changed their laws awhile back to make the credentials necessary to be a PI extremely difficult, almost to the point where pretty much retired police officers are the only ones eligible to become a licensed PI.

That being said I believe hiding the plate in a photo is a holdback from the days where being a PI was fairly easy and many people had access to the database. Its largely outdated practice but its been passed down. In other states besides CA its entirely possible that its easier to become a PI and hence easier to run a plate.

This is my best guess, we have to run plates at work from time to time and it used to be cake but its pretty difficult now and we dont even tell our clients we have the capability to do it because its not worth the hassle

I’m going to say people do this because they see other people do it. Monkey see, monkey do when in reality it’s totally pointless.

Not many people have access to the information behind license plates, only LEO’s and government really can pull up that info.

I used to blur my plates, but after a while it got annoying and I stopped caring. If someone wanted to find me that badly it wouldn’t be that hard.

After I moved my trucks to Poland I was considering a custom plate numbers, but paying 300 dollars for each is not in my nature especially when these plates don't even belong to you, but to the vehicle (can't move to the different car). So instead of showing random numbers on my pictures I use something more cool :). There are not many 5th gen 4Runner or 1st gen Tacoma in Poland, so hiding license plate on my pictures makes no sense from GDPR point of view anyway. That would be like blurring a name of space shuttle for privacy :D.
