Basically your CPS is what tells the computer what RPMs you're at as I understand it. If its erratic or providing bad data, it's a critical piece of the puzzle. Instead of mechanical parts that were on old vehicles, your truck relies on sensors that read the atmospheric pressure, air density/mass/flow, exhaust oxygen levels, fuel pressure(high/low), crankshaft position amongst other things and then determines how much fuel to dump in there to reach the right air/fuel mix for ideal combustion. If there's bad data in the mix, the result could be either lean or (most commonly) rich fuel conditions. For things like O2 and emissions sensors, there are some failsafes in place due to redundancy. Not so with air flow and CPS - those fail, and the whole things goes out of whack pretty quickly.

I hate to think that there are really that many bad CPS out there but as stated above, we'd love to hear more feedback if you do decide to get the CPS replaced. Not a hard thing to do if you follow the DIY instructions (after the truck sits overnight to let everything cool down) - 10-15 mins max. Worse case, you piss away $100 and have a spare... best case, you may find improvements beyond even MPGs. There have been some people who otherwise thought their truck was fine, then replaced the CPS and were like "this is how I expected my new truck to run." Took me from hater to skeptical fanboy of my truck in minutes...
