Most places are marked for which ones you can go on like hatteras island by the light house and Oregon inlet but there are more than that. Plus you have to see which ones are closed due to the birds nesting

Is it all normal beach driving? I also heard that some places you have to have a permit and some are seasonal

depends on what you would call normal. yeah some places require permits and some are seasonal . the sand is really fine and soft which is a huge prob if you are a prerunner.

I was in Avon 2 years ago. Nice soft sand as stated above. It will be pretty apparent as you are driving down the road as to which beach ramps are open.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
north of corolla is a beach road that goes up into VA. no permits and open year round as far as i know. just depends on where you are staying. north of manteo sucks ass b/c it's mainly one lane each way to get all the way up there.

As everyone else has stated soft sand and it will be apparent what is open and what is not. I always go to either the inlet down in hattaras where the ferry's are or in buxton by the lighthouse. If you have any questions on what is open and what is biting stop by any of the tackle shops and they can tell you. Red Drum and the one by the Ferry landing are good ones that seem to know everything that goes on on the island. I drove on "The Point" (by the lighthouse) without airing down with a stock TRD OR 4X4 and rugged fails in 2WD and didn't have any problems. Its all on how you drive. Have fun out there!
