I’ve been running into this issue with my 2020 Tacoma SR A/T 4WD where I’ll hear an occasional rattle coming from the engine bay during acceleration.

It usually occurs during acceleration at low speeds 0-50.

Here’s a video with the sound that it’s making, if anyone has an idea of where to look or what it might be please let me know!

Did you make any headway on this? I've noticed mine doing this exact same thing. It seems like it usually under lighter acceleration and when it's shifting from 3rd to 4th gear in about the 40mph range. Although I have heard it happen as low as 25 mph. I'm bringing mine in to the dealer for the 20k service and oil change on Thursday and I'm going to have them look at it.

FYI, when I brought my truck in yesterday for service I had them look into this. They said the techs were able to replicate it and hear it but they have seen this on several other Tacomas and as of right now Toyota says it's ok and nothing needs to be done about it.

I’ve definitely heard this on mine also, these things are noisy as hell. Hope it’s nothing though

mine was especially noisy in ECT mode. sounded so bad above 3k RPMs. Used 5w-30 on my latest oil change and the engine sounds much healthier than with 0w-20.

My hot take is that stupid vacuum pump making the noise.

Mine does that too. Just noticed a few days ago. I'm at just under 20K miles.

I had taken it into the dealer earlier this month and they weren't able to reproduce the noise. But it sounds like you were able to get them to hear the noise, it does help alleviate some concern if Toyota is saying it's fine but it definitely doesn't sound good for car when you hear it happening.

I bought some Castrol Edge 0w-20 the other day for my upcoming oil change. I was told it would help clean the inside of the engine if there was gunk in it, but I might move to 5w-30 in the future since 0w-20 is water thin lol.

You might be on the money about that tbh, looking at this video below of somebodies vacuum pump the clatter noise sounds a bit similar to the noise I'm getting during acceleration.

Edit: Oh shit, I just realized that this video is yours! lol

Yeah it's annoying when you hear it happening, I'm at 54k miles rn. But the noise appeared probably at around 40k miles, I had installed a CAI at around 30k and ran it until I removed it recently.

I suspected that maybe the CAI had assisted in this problem, but I'm not sure since others who don't have a CAI experience the same noise.

Hm, that's interesting. Might need to have those inspected, anything I should look out for to tell if it's bad?

Fingers crossed lol, if Toyota is saying it's okay then we should be good for now, but it wouldn't surprise me if they came out with a solution in the future. (After my warranty ends with my luck lmao)

Take the belt off, spin each pulley. See which one is howling or feels gritty

My 17 Tacoma had a rattle sound from underneath. Sounded like a torque converter coming loose. the sound "metallic" seemed to be by the transmission. It turned out to be a heat shield bolt rusted apart and held the heat shield together enough to keep it from looking like it fell apart. We put it on the lift and shook the exhaust hard and there was the sound. I fixed it with a stainless-steel muffler clamp. Dealership wanted $200 and said they see this all the time.

I documented that video for warranty purposes. It made that stupid rattle since new.

Almost 10k miles now. I never did change out the vacuum pump. I figured it was just the nature of how the vacuum pump was designed. The internals of the pump consist of female/male luggage swiping against each other in the housing to create necessary vacuum for the brake booster. I dont believe there is any dampeners inside to quite it down.

I hear mine on cold mornings while under deceleration going down hill. Quite a clatter.

..but your noise may be something entirely different.

Toyota didn’t say it was ok. A dealer did. Big difference.
