Posted about this last year because I have an ongoing CEL for p0020 that goes on and off depending on a bunch of stuff (weather namely, fresh oil changes also always trigger it but I have done several cross country trips without it going off) A mechanic replaced the VVT solenoid last June and we have done a bunch of trouble shooting (wiring looks good) But, I got my oil changed a couple weeks ago and got the code again…and also P0023 and p0300 popped up Saturday. I’ve also gotten the code p0012 but not since the solenoid was replaced. I can’t spend any more money on this so I took out the solenoids yesterday and cleaned them. That got rid of the p0023 and p0300 for now. I did some deep internet searching (holy f*** what an absolute nightmare) and I ordered some OCV filters because I believe that, that is part of the culprit as well as a bunch of gunked up oil running through the lines. I read someone snaked the VVT port to the oil pan with a guitar string and it was filthy and it worked!
Im gonna start with filters first but I am having trouble seeing the OCV filter on the drivers side. I think I found the one on the passenger side (photo below) that greasy little nugget does not look good…

Cars are not my strong suit but this issue has been extensive and difficult to tackle by bringing it to a shop, including Toyota. I move a lot and don’t have a consistent mechanic so trying to do what I can while I have a drive way. Any help is throughly appreciated!

found the hex plug buried in the 2TR-FE behind power steering res
    Very Tight Fit
zero clearance for my standard 3/8'' 8mm hex socket with small extension

would this be a better tool to pick up to crack that hex plug? is this how you with the 2TR-FE got that filter changed,

it is such a Small Filter  picked up a new one to see what it is all about
