What's a quality ODB TOOL that works well on the Tacoma.

I would like at a minimum to displays temps, errors and the ability to clear stored codes.

Also data logging while driving would be a nice to have.

I want a stand alone one , not the cell phone ones.

    Thanks for the help.

Carista. You can get it on Amazon. You also have to pay for an app once you get it, which in total everything should run about $70 but totally worth it. Not only reads codes and clears them, but allows you to program settings within the vehicle that only the dealer can do. (such as disable seat belt chime, how many times the turn signals flash when you give it as "soft pull" for lane change, etc)

I know you specifically said stand alone unit but I have had stellar success with a BLUEDRIVER Bluetooth obdII reader and my iPad. I liked it so much that when my wife sold her last car (with my BLUEDRIVER still installed) I bought another. https://www.bluedriver.com/

I can give a full review if you want but respect the fact you mentioned you want a stand alone unit.

Can you bleed brakes through the abs module with this scanner?

Is there a function within your bluetooth scan tool that actuates the abs module in order to bleed air out of the system?

Do you know of any tool that can do this or are you asking for a unicorn? I have never heard of such a feature nor can I figure out how it would do this in a mechanical sense. The abs module has no “vent” or any way that I know of to separate entrapped air from the fluid.

Either I am not understanding what you are asking or your lack of understanding of the system is making you ask for something the system is not capable of.

FA8CBB74-FF4F-404F-BCBF-A5B7EC8B9750.jpg It’s not my lack of understanding of the system. I understand the system quite well. It may be your lack of understanding on modern brake bleeding procedures though. I know of many scan tools that do this, at the shop I use the snap-on versus pro to bleed brakes via the ABS module on mostly all the new vehicles. If you’ve never done this or seen it I highly recommend looking it up. It’s also a step in how to bleed the brakes in our trucks btw...

According to caristaapp.com, carista only offers basic diagnostics for 3rd gen tacoma.

Is it still a SCAN tool when it does more than scan and reset codes?

To be quite honest I had never given it any serious thought. I can see on abs module replacement or similar technology this is a requirement. I have never needed to work near the abs or related equipment. Even with caliper replacement I kept bleeding the old fashioned way. You learn something new everyday.

I use an autel ds708(old model there is newer now) it does actuate the abs pump to allow bleeding. Many other functions as well tpms program ect....
But Carista is under 100 and a tool like this is about 800-1000

Doesn't Carista work on a subscription model for their software? Meaning you have to pay every year to keep using it?

Could be, as I use the autel I have no use for a carista, only going off what I read briefly.

It's a real thing, I have done it before when air was in my system.

hmm curious about this abs bleeding as well now. I need to bleed the brakes on my 3500 hd chevy which calls for bleeding the abs system in a similar way. Anything to keep it out of the dealer! Way rather buy somthing and do it myself!

have you used this on a 3rd Gen? Does it do anything beyond basic diagnostics? Their web page says basics only.
