Aroma, thanks for the offer. I already ordered the one from eBay. If it doesn’t work, I will be in touch.

I looked at the link of the one you purchased from eBay. It doesn’t look cable driven to me at all. It’s good that the mileage is close to your mileage. I hope it works out for you. I’m still having a hard time believing it is cable driven. I think it’s going to work. I think it’s an electric speedometer, if you opted for finding one with the same engine as yours, you could have added a tachometer. The back of that cluster looks pretty much like mine does. Three harness to printed circuit connectors, and that’s it. Here’s a photo of the link. I’m not familiar with the 4 wire connector all the way to the right of the picture.4ADA6C8C-24D5-45B2-A67B-0C564B8F1F90.jpg
See the Phillips head screws? They all have a printed circuit running to them three for the gas gauge, three for the temp gauge, and the four in the middle are the speedometer connector terminals. These screws also mount these gauges into the cluster, you have to remove them to remove the gauge from the cluster.

Pics are right out of the 01-04 workshop manual. Cable driven wasn’t an option, only with tachometer/ without tachometer.55B33EA2-A853-4073-BA60-8FAEED50D4A9.jpg9AF2EA59-EC53-4386-8EFA-AD956CC79A1F.jpg

It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out. If it is cable driven, and the speedo portion is functioning correctly and the odo portion is not...

There is no cable. I replaced my cluster with a cluster that had the tach. Plug and play. There are many threads on this site. Do a search and start reading. There is some discussion regarding v6 or 4cyl compatibility. I paid $90 for mine on EGAY with a tach. If you are replacing at least do an upgrade and you also get a trip meter.

I am curious too! I will keep you posted. It may be a while before I get a chance to have it installed.

Aroma, Unfortunately I could not find a replacement with the tach. Where did you find yours?

I’m not trying to argue with you or anyone. I’ve never seen it myself, and can’t find it in the workshop manual. The speed sensors are a mechanical style on some of the transmission options, so it has a speedometer gear, but no cable. I googled 02 Tacoma speedometer cable, and was unable to locate one for an 02. I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, I’m saying I’ve never seen it. I tried looking up a replacement speedometer cable and couldn’t find it. I know the pre Tacoma trucks had cables, and maybe some of the first few years of the Tacoma, but I’m not sure. I just thought that all cables had been discontinued by 2002.

If no cable, I wonder if the odometer run via a magnetic field. And do you think the panel needs to be cloned to run properly. I would think not given it is not digital, but I am unfamiliar with these things. Thanks again for all your input.

If there isn’t a cable, like the one you purchased on eBay, it will simply start counting where it left off. It’s not a network module, so it doesn’t have to be programmed to the vehicle or anything. It should be plug and play. The speedometer and odometer work by electric motors.
If your truck indeed has a cable, I don’t think the one you purchased on eBay is going to work, unfortunately.
This type of plug and play swapping can easily make people want to commit mileage fraud. The newer instrument clusters are complete computer modules that have to be programmed to the VIN and mileage in the ECU and cluster have to match. This is the only positive thing that I feel about programmable module installation, as this would have to be done by the dealership, or a technician that has a lot of money to burn on a dealership level scan tool. It’s getting ridiculous, that’s why I plan on driving and keeping my taco in good shape for as long as I can.

It just occurred to me, I wonder if the one I found on eBay has the 4x4 indicator light. It looks exactly like my original, but maybe not all have the light if not made for 4x4. Otherwise, I do believe it is plug and play, as the seller indicated.

It should have 4x4 as the clusters were mass produced. It may not have a bulb in the 4x4 slot, but you can easily remove the bulbs and use a small flashlight to see what slot is what. Also look closely at the printed circuit to make sure it looks just like yours, when you get it out.
Push come to shove, it’s very easy to remove the clear plastic face of the cluster, then the four Phillips head screws in the back and swap only the speedometer itself from cluster to cluster.
You may need to remove the plastic face and give everything a good cleaning as well, depending on how much dust is in there. Just be careful with the needles of the gauges, they pull right off, then they aren’t in time anymore. I like to use the cans of computer duster you can buy at Walmart. Clean the clear plastic face with soap and water.

I had wondered if this style odometer would roll back to zero at a million miles. Our digital odometers will stop at all 9’s.

Just received my instrument panel from eBay (instrument cluster store). Here is a photo. It is the same one as posted above. I will have it installed after I return from vacation. The strange thing is that my old odometer works intermittently. I can’t figure that out. Does anyone know why it might do this? Thanks again for all your input. image.jpg

The motor that turns the odometer is probably going bad. Ford rangers were bad for this exact same problem in the 90’s. The problem should be internal to the cluster because you stated that the speedometer works all the time. Now that you have a replacement, smack the instrument cluster with your fist while it’s not working, most of the time it will start back counting.
On the other hand, you could leave it alone….keep some miles off of your truck. That’s totally legal! Ha-ha!

All jokes aside, I like to know my mileage for services and whatever.

Well, I FINALLY got a chance to have my new/used Instrument Panel installed (the smacking the panel routine did not work but I tried. LOL). Anyway the installed panel works great. My mechanic charged $200 to install which seems worth it given it would have taken me hours to figure it out myself. The odometer works, as do all the indicator lights (including the 4x4 indicator light, which I was concerned about). The mechanic also put a sticker on the panel with a note about the change and the previous odometer miles. The new/old one came with 197K. Part of me thought just to keep the old one even though it was broken... but I prefer to have it as it helps with maintenance and miles. etc. All is good. I appreciate all your feedback.
