Has anyone ever replaced the actual camera? I could draw a higher quality image than what is depicted with a stock setup.

not that hard to do. major issues to work around is the 6v power system, and the composite video signal, limiting any video output to a maximum 720x480 pixel resolution.

i would recommend looking into some of the HDR-capable cameras that offer increased dynamic range, which can make the image appear clearer. it's really just camera firmware trickery, but can make a difference.

i'd also like to see you draw a higher quality image!

Actually looking for a better camera image also. Coming from Honda, image and sound quality were generations better.

it isn't a Toyota thing, or a generational evolutionary thing. apparently a 2017 Tacoma has a better image than a 2021. the impediment to DIY improvement, as soundman98 indicates above, is the idiosyncratic proprietary system. this means that the replacement of any single component is unlikely to be successful in terms of integration or being able to overcome the limitations of the overall system.
