I inspect at least every tire rotation. Also, if I’m doing any other maintenance that has a wheel off, I check as well.

Either you live very near the ocean in CA or that truck spent some time in the rust belt over winter...rust consumed the rotor friction surface and abraded the friction off the pad. This is common in the rust belt...especially if the vehicle is allowed to sit for any period of time. Nothing wrong with the parts, its the environment and the usage (or lack there of).

I think you nailed it. I do live neat the ocean and I don't drive this truck often. Like I said I only have 22k in 4.5 years of ownership.

Like others have said, the caliper pins need to be cleaned and greased.

Iam glad this came up, I noticed the brake pads on my passenger side wheel has prematurely worn down (enough for the squealer tab to cut a groove in my disc) while my drivers side pads have alot of meat left on them.
I am replacing front brakes this weekend and paying close attention to the sliding pin..

Did you crack open the brake fluid nipple before pressing in caliper pistons?
I have never done that to any of the hundreds of brake jobs Ive done and have never had an ABS issue, but Ive read about it on these trucks?

41000 on my 19, in the rust belt, and mine still look new. checked at 8000 mi rotations. sorry for your luck. vehicles sitting for long periods may save mileage on the odometer but, are harder on the vehicle maintenance wise, in some cases. water, wet, damp humidity, salt, add to that. When I used to buy used,,, I was just as weary of low mileage, as high mileage,,, sometimes more.

Didn't crack the nipple. I don't think you need to. I do strongly recommend getting the proper piston spreader. It made the job so mush easier.

After 3 Toyota trucks and always used oem pad and rotors never an issue with quality. You must have some sort of caliper issue.

There isn't much you can do to prevent rust on cast iron rotors except drive it. I wish there was a better answer but there's not.

+1 I was going to say this exact thing the more people using their phones while driving the more I see a car going up hill with brake lights on.

Don’t discount a faulty brake house or a pinched hard line. Both can create a one way valve action…letting fluid in, but not out. Seeing the pad wear most likely a caliper issue. That blue tinting on the rotor and the glue in the pad material chunking off like that tell me it got hot af. For the mileage you have its shocking to see any of the pads worn down that much, but if one side isn’t working well the other side gets to do the work. I would replace front brake hardware, and visually inspect, clean, and adjust the rear brakes. Probably do a fluid flush as well. Get a temp gun and check new brakes after break in to determine if possible brake hose. This can happen with Toyota calipers, but is rather rare.

Noticed your signature says autobrakesolutions. I am guessing you deal with this type of stuff on a daily basis. Nice goodies you got there, I wish I found it sooner. Thanks for all the helpful answers!
