OEM Homelink mirror enabled even when vehicle is off?

So it seems the OEM homelink mirror buttons are available even if the vehicle is off armed. This seems like a security risk to me. For a vehicle that is parked outside as thief could use that to gain entry to the garage. On my audi the buttons are only available when vehicle is on. Seems odd that Toyota and Subaru power off all the usb ports etc but leave the mirror active. Leaving a garage door opener in the vehicle is the same risk.

Interesting. I hate it when we don't even have a moment to use them when our 2014 Forester is off.

    No Homelink on my Taco.

No big deal and not odd at all. Odder that garage door opener on Audi powers off.
In 2017 the Tacoma outsold ALL Audis put together in the US. So who's the odd one?

Wow, the point of this thread went over your head. Total number number of sales has nothing to do with being odd or not. Especially since not every Tacoma sold has Homelink. It is odd to be able to access your garage door when the vehicle is off. That means someone can break in to your truck and open your garage door. It's pretty much the same as they could with a garage door opener, but you can at least take the garage door opener out or hide it.

Or go full board and swap your homelink for a non-homelink with someone (I'm game :))

NOTE: If you truly want it switched off ignition, that's available in the 24 pin connector to the overhead console. It shouldn't be too hard to do a T, tap the pin, feed it down the channel to the mirror, de-pin the +12v and swap to ignition switched 12v. Unless the homelink mirror needs a different voltage in which case you could ignition switch the output of the voltage converter using a relay which would be more work. This could qualify as a "mod" with name "Not Always On Homelink Mirror" and would get you street cred for creativity and attention to detail.

I never program home link, and never will. I do have a key fob garage door opener on my motorcycle keys, but that's it. If I actually parked in the garage, it might be a different story. I see stories all the time of people getting their cars rummaged through and the only thing of value taken was the garage door opener.

My biggest problem is forgetting I have the motorcycle keys in my pocket, and having the garage door open while I'm sitting on the couch.

Every vehicle I have had in the past 15 years had home link that could be used with the vehicle off. Toyota, Subaru and Hondas. My point is if the majority works when vehicle is off then the odd is one that turns off with vehicle off.

Wait... I don't... Are we suggesting the Tacoma is parked OUTSIDE the garage?

Don't have or want home link. Even my '14 limited RAV doesn't have it.

I mount my opener under dash. It is drilled with wires soldered to the switch, which go to a small push button switch I mount discretely.

Something I started in my Miata days. To your point a soft top, or top down makes the opener an easy target.

If your truck is armed and you don’t have the key with you (has a proximity sensor in it) then it shouldn’t work. Are you in the truck with it armed and the key is inside and you can still use it?

Key was in house not close enough. Got in locked doors and waited until security light was flashing. Homelink still works

That was my understanding of how it worked.

If you arm the truck, the homelink is disabled.

If you forget to arm your truck, you kinda had it coming.

Oh so many RING videos where someone says "car broken into" but was really unlocked.

locking the vehicle from inside the vehicle does not arm the vehicle. Locking the vehicle with the remote or outside door handle touch is how the vehicle is armed
