    Howdy!

Has anyone tried and/or been able to install OEM TOYOTA hood struts from a 5th-gen 4Runner (or maybe even a 2nd-gen Tundra) on a ‘16-‘23 Tacoma?

Yes, l know Redline and Spiker sell kits, but l’m not a fan of this kind of aftermarket parts as if they stop making them and then you need a replacement, you’ll be SOL.

Anyway, l searched and searched, but haven’t been able to find any info on this mod. It’d seem like, however, the hood struts for a 4Runner could be made to fit on our trucks. I have a hood liner from a 4Runner, so l figure maybe they’d work?

Thank you in advance for any info you guys may provide.

If you're worried, just buy 2 sets up front :)

I love my Redlines and they've not failed on any of the multiple vehicles I've installed them on. They've been around for a while; I don't see them going away any time soon.

I’ve purchased Redline struts on vehicles now for many years. First set on a 1st Gen Tacoma. Just buy a set and don’t worry about it.

The parts used by redline and spiker are just over the counter parts that you can buy online. They just slap their stickers on them.

Here are the brackets they use

Here are the struts they use (I dont know the length they use, but this company sells it all)

    Thanks, Drizzoh!

Yes, that is an option. But, the thing is that l have so many parts/accessories between my dirt bikes and stuff that l can’t keep on saving extra parts because of space.

But, l guess l’ll look at my Tundra’s and also go to my local dealer and see how the 4Runner is set up. I think is doable.

l’m sure someone here must have tried to install OEM struts from some other vehicle already.

    Thanks, again for chiming in!

I’m just concerned with future availability. That’s always been my doubt about buying aftermarket stuff. I have gone thru this before….

Wow! Thank you. Great info. I’m thinking l may be able to combine some of this hardware with OEM struts. Gotta do some research…

Why do you need OEM struts? Aftermarket are available in all lengths and sizes and have been for the past 60+ years. OEM is only required to keep making a part available for 10 years past its last model year.
Also the OEM are usually made by the same company as the after market ones.

OEM struts… doubt it. They sell them but doubtful if Toyota makes them. Same with belts, wipers, filters, and even oil. They buy all of this from another maker.

Good point. Yeah, l guess knowing the specs l need for my truck, l then could buy replacements, if need be, at any auto part.

Yep! And, the worst part is that most likely all is made in effing China! ‍♂️

Likely to be true with some. Parts might be assembled here, but probably come from overseas in most cases. It’s hard to get made in USA, but I try where I can.

An important thing to remember as well is that the aftermarket kits position the mounts in the correct place and are confirmed to fit on these vehicles and with gas pressures correct for the application. You will have to do all that r&d on a homemade kit.

I wouldn't go to that trouble or extreme. Redlines have good struts made for specific models. They're durable and easy to install. If one or both fail just buy another set. They're no that expensive.

Yeah, l called Redline and wasn’t too impressed with their “tech” help or info on the website. My truck has a 6-speed manual tranny and Redline does not even mention that l will need spacers. At least, at Spiker’s they do mention and even sell a spacer kit.

That is why l am thinking the 4Runner’s struts would work great…

I hope this OP guy eventually gets what he wants, Even if it is a tundra or 4-runner strut and bracket modified, and somehow attached perfectly, to fit the struts he wants under his Tacoma hood. I guess I took the easy way out by buying aftermarket. If they fail, then I’ll just go buy another set. If redline is out, I’ll just buy some other brand because I don’t give a darn about the brand.
