OEM rail alternatives

I did some searching, but could find anything.

So, does anyone know of any alternatives to the OEM (or the knock off OEM) roof rails for the 3rd gen.

All I found was one by Rhino Rack, bit it is not very universal and only will work with the Rhino rack racks.

I am not looking for a full rack. I would like something that uses the factory mounting locations, but a little more beefier than the stock rails.

I am not worried about cross bars as I do not want something where the cross-bars are always out as I wont be using them all the time and rather just put some bolt on crossbars on when I do need it.

So again, just looking for roof side rails, not a full rack. It can have cross-bars, but I dont want the cross-bars permanently fixed (to resuce noise when not in use).

 

I went with OEM as the price with crossbars was hard to beat, for light duty occasional use. However, the Rhino Rack tracks are in fact quite universal. They work with Yakima or Thule towers and crossbars, to support a range of crossbars and other parts for bikes, skis, baskets etc. And the threaded nutplates that fit in the Rhino Rack tracks can be the basis for all kinds of DIY stuff.

My preference would be to have something that is raised out of the track (like how the factory rails are). This is mostly for looks as I do like the way the OEM rack looks as opposed to the bare roof. I just figured some fabricator must have made the OEM Style rack better. I had one on my 2016 tacoma and never felt comfortable with it with my 75# kayak on it. Would have liked something made from less plastic.

Thanks, this looks like exactly what I wanted.

Some aside rails for aesthetics, but yet more heavy duty than the factory rails for when I need to use them.

Do you know if there are any limitations with which cross bars I can use with this? I dont want the ARB basket that these are designed for.

 

ARB will likely say you need ARB bar such and such. I’ve got a set (just the bracket I mentioned) coming and just plan on using some square tubing to support a stained wood platform.

 

Please post back when you get it installed. I cant find any pictures of it without the basket attached.

There ya go. Seems pretty stout even without any cross bars installed.

I'm going to install some 2x2 steel cross bars then some stained and epoxy coated pine (maybe spruce as I'm going to see a guy about some clear spruce stock for some oars in a few days) longitudinal boards as a load deck.
