That's why I'm suggesting Toyota to eat the bill and just added to vehicles with Push Start.

I think that they have trouble adding sensors to let the computer know if its in gear or not when starting it.

That's dumb. I just put a switch in mine to bypass the clutch, I just have to remember to turn it off when I park in gear lol

Does your truck shut off when you open the door?

My climate is pretty temperate. However if I lived in a particularly cold area I'd do it in a heart beat.

This is not a question of OEM vs Aftermarket, but rather whether or not the remote start unit is able to do a system "takeover."

I looked into remote starters when I bought my truck in February of this year. No OEM options were available, and every aftermarket installer I spoke with told me that no aftermarket systems were able to do the takeover for the '16 Tacoma, and thus the vehicle would shut off as soon as you unlocked it (exactly the behaviour you've described).

It's possible things have changed in the last few months and new methods are available - I haven't checked. Me - I'd choose OEM every time.

Every local installer I spoke with earlier this year quoted me in the neighbourhood of $1000CAD for an aftermarket system. $500 (USD, even) for OEM? Yes, please.

It's not OEM if the car shuts off when you unlock it

Yeah, I'd pay $500 for a system, OEM or not, that would not shut the vehicle off when I get in (I have push button start).

I suspect the dealer added an aftermarket unit to your truck.

Sounds like they used a DBALL. Which is what you would use to make the factory key fob remote start the vehicle. It's actually a 40$ part and very easy to install if you know what your doing.

The problem is I always leave my truck in gear. It's a habit I've had since I started driving. I just don't want to risk my emergency brake failing and the truck rolling away. I notice the stock tires have extremely low rolling resistance compared to my old STi or my Vette. I can roll out of my garage and halfway down to the corner of my street and there's barely an incline. My Vette can sit in my garage with the e-brake off and it won't budge.

I wonder if that's only the case for the push button start. The manual has a conventional key like the 2G trucks which had no issues with the takeover. My old Viper had an amazing "pit stop mode" which let you pull the key after the car had been running, which was perfect if I left something in the house and didn't want to shut off the truck.

With the new push to start technology, the car will shut off anyway, no matter what make or manufacturer produced it. It is a safety switch. OEM or aftermarket. Either way it will shut off.

If you have a regular key you stick in the ignition, it will not shut off.

When you have OEM, it won't shut off because the car knows when the key is inside the vehicle.
