Most of us are using a rubber grommet (Home Depot sells the perfect size). The grommet holds the boot retainer down on the shaft. Looks pretty decent actually.

Edit: it's the 3/4" grommet from Home Depot. Don't go looking for a 3/4" grommet else where because they won't work properly; that's not the typical naming convention - though I could send you measurements if you wanted to find it from another provider. It's shaped like a thick flat disc with a groove cut into it around the circumference. You trim off one of the flanges and you're good to go.

Thank you for your detailed description Omar. I went yesterday to Home Depot after work and got mine. It was at the section where all the nuts, bolts, and screws were and also at electrical supplies where splices were kept. Mines an automatic, so i hope the boot is the same for both models. My new shift knob is a ball with just the letters TRD on it.
