One of the highlights on this truck IMO, and to be honest did not expect to say that. I know at least one member had an issue with popping one of his out on the trails early on in the 3rd gen release cycle (Mike330R ... IIRC) but I've beat the hell out of these things in rocks, desert terrain, snow, ice and mud. They've held up and performed really well to my surprise. I can't kill them so far with hundreds of miles of off-pavement and 10k miles on pavement. Pretty happy with these actually. Yeah they don't look so tough as Duratracs or KO2s might but they're a big improvement over the oldschool Rugged Fails.

EDIT: 16K miles (probably 2K offroad) and still going strong!

Anyway that's my positive message for the week...

I agree. More capable than most people think or want to think for need of finding an excuse to buy new tires.

Honestly was hoping mine would fail so I'd have an excuse to spend $800 on new shoes. No such luck!

I have had mine off road; down flooded back roads and through the Louisiana back crawfish roads. They seem durable and they clean well. I have 11,000 miles on them ... mostly highway, and they have been a great all around tire.

Similar experience here, sitting at 10k miles myself and a couple off roading excursions. They've held up really well on the trails and long roadtrips.

I'm surprised and happy with mine so far too. I can't believe they only weight what, 35 lbs?

    I can.
If you ever had them off and felt around the sidewall, they are extremely thin.

My fav tires ever are Nitto Trail Grapplers. I had them on my Avalanche in 35" that was lifted and loved those things.

I've got the factory Toyo Open Country tires (for 245/75/16) on mine, they haven't misbehaved yet but all I had them on so far was a damp gravel road. They don't look too inspiring for much more than that, plus I need something for the snow.

I agree. I'm not sure I will get the same thing once they wear out, but they've held up so far. On-road grip is really impressive and they are light, so they make good OEM tires (braking distance and MPG are better). The biggest concern is puncture or other failure off-road. We will probably see more failures as we wear them down and there's less tread rubber protecting the tire.

I haven't heard much about those. Was seriously considering toyo open country II when the stockers go out or maybe a duratrac ...definitely want C rated and not large. Torque already sucks ass on this truck

I assume everyone has seen this article already, but just in case:

    http://expeditionportal.com/where-the-rubber-meets-the-road/

Their description of the on-road performance matches my observation.

With limited lug deflection and a compact tread pattern, the tire proved responsive at higher speeds and provided a very direct feel. The Wrangler also scored well on the various asphalt tests, where it turned in the fastest average times on the slalom track and the highest lateral G on the skid pad. Emergency braking was also excellent, with solid straight-line stability and the second lowest average stopping distance in the group. Given the tire’s shallow tread depth and compact lug configuration, the road results were not surprising.

Yeah, I've checked on a 265/75 16 in the Trail Grappler and they are load E, 62 lbs. My Avalanche had a good 8" lift and I regeared it to 4.88's. It ran awesome, but I only got 9 mpg 'easy' driving. That was back in 08-11 when gas went through the roof. I was working on my doctorate and driving a lot while teaching full time, so I got a civic, lol. I miss that truck, it was a beast!

I think these tires are awesome. They did great in the massive snow that hit the East coast. They did fine on the light off roading I've done and they are quiet and smooth on pavement.

I am having a hard time justifying buying different tires. Toyota did a good job pairing these IMO.

Edit: the only con I have is that they seem to want to hydroplane. Hitting any decent puddle at speed Adds +80 to the pucker factor.

My '16 Sport currently has Firestone Destination ATs on it. I've been thinking about replacing them with the Kevlars discussed here (in the appropriate size, of course). Would you agree that would be a step up in terms of aggressiveness?

I crossed 15k yesterday on the OEM tires and have no complaints. I've got ~5-600 miles worth of off pavement use out of them, much of that running at or below 18 psi. I've crossed lava beds without incident and most surprisingly, no chunking. I'm plenty satisfied with these tires, if not even a little impressed.
