OEM Tonneau Cover Weather Strip Dissolves

Three years in and the weather stripping for my OEM Tonneau cover (ASC F-44X9-1200-AWXX) started to dissolve. Not sure what is causing it or than maybe not UV stable? Who knows. Anyway, Toyota is especially difficult to fine the proper part numbers for the weather strips. For those in the need the part numbers are:

64971-04011, Cover Tonneau Cover Front for the front two strips in between panel #1 and #2

64972-04011, Cover Tonneau Cover Rear for the strip in between panel #2 and #3

    Two notes:

    1. Replacing them is moderate easy. Hardest part is digging the old strip out of the channel. The strips are made with one time use tabs, so expect to destroy the old strips getting them out. I had to clamp on them with vise-grips to pull them out. Clean the channels, and the new strips just snap right in with a soft mallet.
    2. The prices swing greatly across the internet. Some dealers have them at $10.00, but $15 for shipping, others offer free shipping but $50.00. Shop prices before committing.

Wow that's sure not right. How old is the cover ?? Toyota should be footing the bill.

I would still let Toyota have a look at it.

Are there any differences between the two parts? They look exactly the same on the truck but the dealers want $50 for the rear seal compared to $15 for the front. Just curious if I can't use two fronts and save some coin.

@mstephan10 Thanks for the part info. I bought the parts to replace mine for about $80. When you removed the bad gasket and installed the new part did you have to unscrew anything or did you just rip them out and push them back into the slot?

OP- did you ever use any product on that rubber? It almost looks melted. I always wondered how this rubber holds up in super hot places or in freezing cold. My 2016 was built in Nov ‘15 so the rubber is almost 6 yrs old now and just split one strip yesterday. So Ca. Temps here are from 40° to 110°. Glad to see just the rubber is avail. alone. FYI-rubber parts like this are not covered under warranty. They are “consumable” parts like belts and hoses. You might get lucky though at some dealers and get them covered.

For some reason those two part numbers aren’t working on the Toyota Parts website

Did you receive the parts? Can you post a picture?
I'm curious mostly about the 64972-04011 part, as to why it costs so much more and why it is only quantity 1.

I also have the OEM cover and curious why we would need a quantity of more than one for either strip? I want to order back ups for mine, just in case, but am a bit confused..

There are three separate strips. The two 12$ strips makeup one joint and the $40 strip makes up the other joint.

The first pic in this post makes it clear. The rear-most hinge uses one wide rubber seal. The front-most hinge is much wider (a double hinge) and uses two narrow seals.

Also, I am embarrassed, as I looked directly at those strips and didn't even notice the front hinges had two covers...good lord....!

I ordered the new seals for mine this morning. I had the cover off for about 2 weeks (first time I had ever removed it) because I had to have the entire rear window replaced due to broken driver side glass. When I put the tonneau back on yesterday one of the seals was really starting to crack.

    From ToyotaPartsDeal.com . . .
    64971-04011 Cover Tonneau Cover $10.75 Qty-2 total $21.50
    64972-04011 Cover Tonneau Cover $36.22 Qty-1 total $36.22
    Shipping and handling $11.54
    Grand total $69.26

I ordered these parts online from a Toyota dealer in Idaho for about half of what my local dealers charge in CA. even with shipping. The seal swap out was really easy.
Biggest trick was letting the tonneau cover and the new seals in their bags sit in full sun for at least 30 minutes before starting. The old ones come right out and the new ones are super pliable and easy to snap in. Cost me about $85 to replace all 3. I also made a YouTube video for reference and noting some tricks to know before starting as there were none covering this subject. >>> https://youtu.be/Ns73vernM6Q

    Nice helpful video!

Now you should clean up the tonneau really good, then apply a coating of Cerakote. I did mine over a year ago and it still looks good. Brings back the darker color, and helps it to stay dark. My cover used to look much the same as yours.

Thanks for the compliment. So does the Cerakote last long? Ive used other products that look great after application, but after one truck washing its mostly gone.
I also think that some products have led to the premature "melting" of some of the seals we've seen on here. No issue with Cerakote affecting the seals? Thanks
