I can't see a part number with the site I use for parts reference. I do remember on my first gen that Toyota did not sell the steering rack bushings individually and I had to source some poly ones from power flex or energy.

You're right, nevermind cause from what I can tell on 3rd gens too the rack bushings are considered part of the actual steering rack assembly and sold as one unit.

Only in today’s world does a $40 parts replacement become a $1,400 one. I wonder if they’re using some sort of special method to insert them,,, kind of doubt it. I understand some things being sold as an assembly, but damn.

totally agree, seems like major overkill and waste if the rack isn't leaking or anything

Nothing says “not my problem” like making a repair cost 40-50 fold.

Replacing mine soon with the energy suspension bushings. You have cut the old bolts out (unless you want to lift the motor), install the new bolts the opposite way so you don't have to cut them next time.

Dealer wont do just bushings, a good amount of basic shops won't cut and air hammer out the old bushings. You'll have to do it yourself or find a GOOD shop that knows what they're doing.

Hate to necro this, but even with these bushings do I have to remove the entire steering rack to get to them? I don't care about cutting the heads on the bolts and installing them upside-down. I just want to be able to pop the old shitty bushings off and out in these without removing that whole steering rack assembly. That's just a nightmare to me.

Yes. And you may need to loosen the front diff to get the rack out. Kind of a big job on 3rd gens

I don’t have a front diff. This is for a 2WD. It’s gotta be hit and miss on steering issues with the 3rd gen’s. Because my 2017 never exhibited the bump steer and floaty steering I’m getting with my 2021.

So what is the recommended action here? Replace the bushings? If the bushings are actually fine, replace the rack? And if it’s replace the rack then with what that is vastly superior?

If your bushings are worn, replace the bushings.
If you rack is bad, replace the rack.
If you want to remove some rack deflection, replace the rack bushings.
