First and foremost for any vehicle, offroad or not, is a good fire extinguisher that is readily accessible. Every rig should have one.

A buddy's truck had a fuel fire the other day, and if it hadn't been for having a fire extinguisher the truck would have been a total loss, instead all that happened were a few melted wires.

 

Any suggestions for one? Wondering if the smaller ones have enough capacity. Or if a larger one should be kept. And how much is it to recharge them and where if you happen to know that too, would be appreciated.

 

I haven't looked into getting them recharged, mine still has a few years before it expires, and when I does I'll probably just buy a new one.
I just keep a small one in my truck, I believe it's a 3 pounder or close to that, it would be plenty big to put out a small fire, but with any fire extinguisher and a car fire it will all be about time, catch it soon enough and it would be easy to put out.

Small ones like the one I have in my truck are cheap, under $40 easily for a good one, cheap insurance. Just make sure you get one with the correct ratings for a potential vehicle fire

 

Any issue with keeping a fire extinguisher in the truck in summer temps? Mine says not to store over 120 degrees and I think it gets at least that hot in the truck, no?

 

it should be ok. we keep ours in the cabs of most work trucks,no issue yet. but we do recharge them every year. but you can shake them to keep the powder from forming a block in the bottle. or hold them upside down and smack with a rubber mallet. keeps the powder sprayable.
