    Was just wondering if anyone has a similar truck with some off-roading experience that could tell me what I am and am not capable of with my Tacoma PreRunner. I'm not looking to go driving through anything crazy, but I would like to know what I should avoid if I don't want to get stuck. I have taken it to the beach several times and haven't had any issues, but I think I'd like to step it up a notch maybe.

    you can go a lot of places with a 2wd and most will tell you it is the driver more than the truck. With that being said after I bought my TRD pre runner I immediately took it off road and got stuck in sugar sand for about 3 hours until someone could come pull me out. The whole time my wife and I were thinking we made a mistake and should have got the 4x4. 6 months later I traded it in for the 4x4 and love it. But for some 2wd is perfect and they don't need anything more. Just have all the essential recovery gear and a winch just in case and you will be fine IMO.

    being 2wd skinnie pedal is your best friend. BUT where a prerunner sucks is articulation. Once you lose traction your screwed. So stay flat a plow thru the watery mud holes:mudding:

    All you need is a rear locker and a winch and you're golden. Know when to use your gears and lining can be everything.
    Downhills- use 1st gear it's easier on the engine
    Uphill and mud/snow- 2nd or 3rd gear
    The prerunner is just about capable as a 4x4. If you're unsure don't go alone, maybe bring some recovery equipment like a shovel

    You just gotta get out there and try it.... Stick with EASY / GREEN trails.

    Never go offroad alone. Always have another vehicle with you.

    The capabilities of your vehicle is actually a combination of the vehicle and your driving skills. Nobody can predict what you & your driving skills are capable of. It's something you gain with experience.

    Your limitations are more driver than truck. Many a skilled driver can take a 2WD truck places some who have 4WD trucks wouldn't dare go. The trick is to NEVER wheel alone, and to learn what you can and can't do. I always say that you have never TRULY been wheeling until you have gotten stuck. Once you get stuck you have learned that the truck, and your driving at that point, were not sufficient. Then you learn something new, or try a different driving style. That is the only way to get experience. When I first started wheeling in my old 76 GMC Jimmy, I would get stuck all the time, then my brother-in-law would laugh, and show me how to get it un-stuck. I learned and got better. Practice, practice, and more practice. Then you can learn the limits of your truck.

    If it's sandy, muddy or snowy, I wouldn't stray too far from civilization. Other than that you're only limited by your ground clearance and willingness to beat on your truck. You'd have to flog your truck through rough terrain that a 4WD can ease through in 4-Lo.

    Thanks for the inputs! Also, mine doesn't come with a rear locker, only an auto LSD function. What difference does that make?

    you aren't locked and have an open diff. It realllllly sucks for offroading. I have the same and get stuck quiet often because of it. Basically whenever you have a wheel that looses traction it sends more power to that wheel and less to the other wheel. Now picture you somewhere that one wheel is in soft sand or even slightly off the ground. The wheel that actually has traction is not getting the power. It is sending the power to the other wheel so basically I just end up having a tire spinning when I wish the other one would spin to get me out. With a locker they are "locked" and will both spin no matter what.
