After living in LA and Houston I leave nothing in the vehicle no matter where I park that I'm not willing to lose or it goes in the console vault.

    1) ... and risk identity theft.

    2) Really? So the fucking thief can go out and steal from someone else to pay you back?

Sorry that happened to you man. I hope that you get your stuff back. I had that happen to me once. I found out who, and just called some friends.

Story ends here, 'cause I'm old and forget shit.

It's easy to say "don't leave important items in your vehicle". Sure, but I don't live in nor do I park this truck in any city. This is an off road truck we're talking about. Without having the recovery gear and tools in it, it's a car. I've been caught out there without just one vital piece of that equipment before and I will never let it happen again. Paying a tow company to come get your rig when you're 80km out some trail with a broken axle and it's -20 and snowing is not gonna happen. That has happened to us, along with a long list of other break downs and stucks. Spend a few overnights in -20 degree temps, or take an 18km night walk back out a trail with a pack of wolves following behind and you'd never be without your recovery gear either!

I'll be coming up with some kind of lockable heavy duty steel box to bolt down somewhere in or on the truck. That's the only way I see forward here.

Unless the missing things have identifying markings that are unique to you, no court will recognize them as yours. (That's why we record VINs, serial numbers & etc.) Even should your items be found on Kijiji, there is no way to claim them back unless there is some unique identifier. A Mastercraft screwdriver is just like any other unless it is marked. And the police can't enter them into CPIC as lost property nor can the police seize them if found. That means the thieves will not be convicted for theft. If stolen items are recovered and found to be marked, the whole picture changes. Thieves are convicted and punished, they're stopped from thieving from you and others, victims get their things returned and even restitution.

I hesitate to say all of this with the way you must be feeling right now, but I'm thinking of the future. No doubt you'll be replacing the things they took. It costs little to take time and protect them by marking them. Ask your local coppers about what to use as an identifier. If not a SIN, there must be some other way they can recommend.

Just found out to replace the 4runner keys that were stolen out of my tacoma I'll have to get my 4runner to the dealership. Anyone have any ideas on how to get a locked 4runner with no keys 160km to my nearest dealership?? Tow truck is completely out of the question. I wouldn't want to try and pull it behind the tacoma on a flatbed, thing can barely pull my 2 quads.

I would call Toyota. If you have a VIN and title, and a police report for the theft of the key, I can't imagine why the dealer would not replace it.

They have no problem replacing it, but they said truck has to be at the dealership so the chipped key can be programmed to work with the ECM and immobilizer. I asked them if I could just take the ecm out and take it to them, but they said there's more to the system that needs to be reprogrammed.

    I feel your pain.

Last time I had to tow a car, I borrowed a trailer from a guy who races. These racers often have nice trailers lying around (except for weekends).

    Good luck!

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
If you catch a thief in the act of taking your property it should be a freebie. What it boils down to is that your labor allowed you the means to purchase something they are now forcibly taking from you. They're helping themselves to the fruits of your labor. Which is called slavery. I'm okay with hurting somebody for enslaving me. The people who say things can be replaced can give their property and labor away. I hate that they force me to. I'm not giving shit away.

I guess my 4000lb 4runner will be within the 6500lb max as long as the trailer is under about 2300lbs. Does anyone know if I need a special weight distributing hitch to be legal? I have one of those 10" Anderson hitches and it's rated for 8000lbs. Will have to inflate my tires to 50psi in hopes it will pull it better.
