    Hi everyone,

I will be officially joining the Tacoma family today after work! Super stoked to finally own a truck and start my modifications to make it my own.

Since this will be my first car that isn't lowered, I am worried about the rear cats being stolen..

I would like to replace the stock Y pipe with an aftermarket pipe that deletes the rear cats, such as the URD or Roostfactor's equal length Y pipe, but it appears neither one is being produced anymore?

The only aftermarket option I can find is the catted aFe Y pipe, which doesn't really help me..

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

Maybe you can pay a local exhaust shop to make you a life size mockup of what their y-pipe would look like if it didn't have any of the rear cats. Just make sure they include the sensor bungs. Then what you do with it after you get home is completely up to you. Kinda bummed that URD stopped making them too, maybe California got their hooks into them even though they were marketed as "off road use only". Or you can call or email their customer service and see if they can make you one. You'll probably pay a premium for it though.

Going down to my local muffler shop is probably going to be my best bet because I can't seem to find anything available online.. I have been going to him for 18 years, so hopefully he will be cool with the removal of the rear cats, especially since they aren't monitored by the ECU anyways. Worst case, I will suggest that he fabricate a catless Y pipe, but not install it.

If anything, I will do the Doug Thorley shorty headers with the stock cats welded to them so I can stay CARB compliant.. I think those are the only SMOG legal headers I have come across. (living in CA SUCKS...) I figured swapping the catless Y pipe with the stock one would be easy enough every 2 years when I have to pass smog.

Does anyone know of the aFe Y pipe from a 2005-2011 4runner / 2007-2014 FJ will fit the Tacoma?

I'm guessing not, but there's one for sale locally to me.

I would go cat shield over cat delete for several reasons.

First and foremost, life changes in unexpected ways, and you will regret a cat delete if you have to sell your truck quickly OR you find yourself moving to a county that requires annual emissions. Second, your cat delete is on a truck with a warranty, right? What happens if the secondary O2 sensor burns out (its been known to happen) and the dealer sees your delete? Warranty denied, and your 10-year emissions coverage is gone.

Third, a cat shield is faster, cheaper, and DIY - you don't have to take it to a muffler shop. Last, they are there for a reason. Deleting them has zero performance gains, and almost zero advantage. Don't cut your nose to spite your face.

I just bought the truck yesterday and have zero intentions of selling it anytime soon. The truck is used, so no warranty to deal with and fully in my name. No lienholder. I also just bought a house back in October, so I'm definitely not going to be moving counties any time soon, if anything I'll be moving to Nevada when the time comes to get out of Commiefornia.

I'm also not talking about removing the primary cats, only the secondary cats that are NOT monitored by the ECU but much more accessible to thiefs. Secondly, the Y pipe looks to be a very simple swap that I could easily do myself. No need to go to a muffler shop if I find an aftermarket Y pipe.

Lastly, going to a larger/aftermarket Y pipe without the rear cats has been dyno proven to free up horsepower/torque on the 2nd gens, plus I'm supercharged, so even more power to free up. The stock Y pipe is without question a bottle neck in the exhaust system.

I do however appreciate your concern by trying to look out for me. I always keep any stock parts I take off so I can easily revert back to stock if necessary.

I'm actually getting ready to walk out the door to go meet up with him! I'm also going to buy his gen 1 TRD intake so I can replace this heat soak waiting to happen:

    Thanks for the heads up!

Also also, you have a very clean and well documented build! I have already started to read through it and booked marked it for future reference. I already ordered the ZZPerformance IC pump because of you and I'm sure more parts will follow because of your write up.

    Thanks again!

The people stealing cats often have no idea what they are doing. There are tons of stories of people getting resonators stolen. If and when it ever does happen, make an insurance claim.

Congrats on both purchases! And thx for the kind words regarding my build.

If there is a rabbit hole for you to dive into, this would be the thread (since your truck is supercharged)

I was quoted $330 to do a reroute to fit xfer case skid.
For $600 you’re getting new exhaust that performs better, that fits without having to do a reroute.

a reroute is only needed for xfer case skid
RCI trans skid with cat protector shields can fit without that.

I would assume the O2 sensors are placed pre main cat, post main cat
With the secondaries downstream being unmonitored and an additional afterthought by Toyota to help further reduce emissions

that being said, I don’t know if it would be regrettable. If it would add to much sound, or if a single Vibrant resonator inline in the catback can solve potential issues of drone.
If it would smell worse (probably not if it still has both higher main cats)

    And smog legality
One part of a smog test is visual inspection. Doesn’t have to be a mirror. Tech can lay under the truck with its ride height and look.
Yes you may get skids for off roading. But I don’t know if they’ll ask you to take them off.
Or if they’ll find a gap to snake a borescope in and look.

after all, a borescope camera tool that connects to your phone for viewing is only like $25 online and a shop of any kind (even just a regular repair shop, which smog shops often also do) is going to have some kind of borescope as a necessary tool that’s useful for many different things.

then what. You potentially try and find a guy to pass it for extra money? How much is that, $350? When? Every year?
$350 a year? Versus the normal $50-100 rate, to have 5 more HP?

I think skids are worth it because in CA if your cats are stolen you likely have to prove you put in new CARB-approved ones which are like $1600 a set or more
Compared to non-CARB cats being a couple hundred bucks each
and CA is not the only state that requires smog tests
