so my truck is lightly modified Bilstein's with HD springs front and an ARB bumper and a winch, but I've taken that up plenty of places heck I've pulled my nephew out of the woods with my Tacoma and its only skid is on the bottom of that ARB bumper. just drive smart. better tires will get you plenty of places

Don't sweat it: We were all new at one time. Welcome to TacomaWorld! :proposetoast:

2014 SR5 4x4 here: bone stock. I take it on Forest Service and Paper Company roads and land all of time fly fishing in the spring and fall. Some of the roads are a challenge with wash-outs and streams running down and across them. You just have to know and understand your limits and turn-around. (and listen to the little voice that is telling you: "enough".) The biggest challenge sometimes is finding a spot to turn around! I think the most important item on the truck is the tires. I have Michelin A-T-somethings. They work without really thinking about them.

You won't need any modifications if you learn how to pick a line and proceed with caution as you learn more about what your truck can or can't clear. Mild all terrain tires one size larger than stock are a sensible first step.

I run a stock TRD OFF-ROAD with Cooper Rugged Trek tires. But to be fair my off roading is bad winters up and down on un-maintained side roads in the mountains so not really off roading I suppose. Even the fire roads I run are single lane dirt roads that again are not maintained at all so no salt or plowing. Some good holes but none are over the Toyo logo on wheels but can be muddy or very snowy. We don’t have any public trails other than those during our hunting seasons. I do want to get a winch maybe and some basic recovery tools and straps.

Tires will make a difference but that is really the bare minimum to be honest. Momentum is your friend as well.

Do not off-road a stock truck until you put on RGB LED rock lights. The brightest, most in-your-face possible.
Night and day difference in off-road performance :hattip:
Here is my truck for reference
