Rpms are too high on freeway. Truck is around 3000 rpm at 70. I did it before I installed a supercharger. Also have a 4 banger.

I've also considered the same change. I did the same as you w 4.88 and 33s, just went turbo instead of S/C. Rpm feel a bit high now.

Yeah it's not very comfortable on long trips. I'm still averaging about 20 mpg highway but would be nice to cruise a little faster. Think I would notice much of a difference from 4.88 to 4.56?

According to grimmjeeper it would lower RPMs by ~200 at 70-75 mph. 70mph would be 2800rpm and 75 would be 3000rpm

I sooooooo want to, but ima have to wait for next year. Even though this is a screaming deal. I literally got the 285s this week. I have only driven the truck a couple times, and initial thoughts are that I can live with it......for now:anonymous:

Though I would love to be locked up front/regear for 2/3 of the normal cost

Do we have enough people for the discount?? If so I'm in for a set of 4.88s. Took a trip to Moab this weekend just after putting on 33" tires and my truck was screaming in 3rd gear to maintain 70mph up rt. 6.

Thought I'd share this formula for those that haven't seen the episode of Power Nation with the 2011 Tacoma they are working on...

New tire size/Stock tire size X Stock gear ratio = Recommended gear ratio to keep stock feel

Hey fellas, I have a 2005 manual taco and running 285/65R18 tires and was wondering if one of these gear ratios would improve the extreme torqueness experienced with the stock gears I'm currently running? Also, what is the benefit of the front gear locker over the stock system? Thnx

I'm not sure what torqueness feels like. To me that means too much torque, but you're running bigger tires than stock and it's a Tacoma...so you couldn't possibly mean that
If you mean it feels like not enough torque...you want a higher gear ratio so your transmission doesn't work as hard. Plenty of information out there to research that.

Front differential air locker basically locks the independent axles so the driveshaft moves both axles. If you have front and rear differentials locked and 4wd engaged...all 4 wheels will be getting torque applied.

Alright, so I made up Torqueness but thought it sounded good dammit! :D But your right it feels like I have to shift into 2nd gear instantly and not going anywhere fast when doing so. So does the 4.56 gear ratio improve that issue or some other combination you can reccomend? As for the Locker, I've read a lot about it but could never really get a definitive answer on how its an improvement over the stock system and what is required I.e. other equipment and labor needed for the install. So I appreciate any insight you can provide, so I can join the group buy! Thnx

Probably just need the 4.88 ring & Pinon and the rear master install kit.

    4.56 would be the choice.

Front locker works like your rear locker. That said, unless you're doing some pretty hard offroading you'll never use it.

One reason it's nice is it makes the front diff stronger as well. Something I'm looking forward too.

Just a ring and pinion and install kit. So Lindsey pinion spacer is recommended. Then someone to install it.

Just wanna give a shoutout to @Low Range Off-Road - I was in Moab and ruined my spider gears so I wanted to go ahead and do a rear locker instead of just putting stock spider gears back in. The shop (Moab 4x4 Outpost) and I called like 40 vendors and nobody had access to an ARB air locker they could get us within a short time frame. Once I called Low Range they gave me a list of vendors to try and one of them (Fat Bob's Garage) was able to get me a locker within 2 days to get me back home to Alabama. A few vendors simply said no they couldn't find me anything and ended the conversation, but Low Range (wish I knew who I spoke with) spent time on the phone with me and even made calls to vendors for me as well. Customer service speaks volumes for me personally and they helped me find who I needed to get me home, with no personal gain on their part. Props to Low Range and this is a great deal if anybody is looking to buy this stuff!
