maybe it's just me, but my truck seems to have good days and bad days. it'll shift perfect without a hitch one day, and clunky the next.
probably just me though. it is after all my first manual.

I've learned a while ago that the un-commanded rev after out of gear is an emission reducing feature. To fully burn what was coming in ...
Try letting go of the gaz a little bit before clutching, that reduces it.

Many cars are like that. The most annoying one I've driven was a Saturn SL2.

I will agree that the 6speed isnt the best IMO, but I can live with it. It takes some getting used to and learning how to drive it smoothly, but it is possible. I've only noticed about 1/2 of your complaints on mine. A short throw shifter kit helped my notchy shifting 90% or so, and some synthetic oil in it helped a tad too.

ive had my 07 6spd 4x4 since new and i have 19k miles on it, i have had trans problems from day 1, my main complaint is the noise in neutral especially in a fast food line or in a parking lot when next to another car and the noise reflects off the wall or car and is very loud, when i push in the clutch it goes away so i know its inside the trans!!!! Also i have a notchy 3rd gear all others are good but my upshift to 3rd drives me crazy it makes noise sometimes like a grind other times i just have to push it through the notchy part, im happy to see other people are having issues to now i want to see some get fixed!!

I agree. On the 5 spd, 1st gear seems too low and 2nd gear seems a little high. I'm used to it now, though.

    +1

The revs hanging is emissions related.

I think the 1 to 2 shift leaves a little to be desired but overall it is a decent trans. URD short shift and shortened throw clutch mod helped most of my complaints.

I'm sorry to hear about all of your complaints. I couldn't be happier with the manual transmission on my 2008 4X4 Access Cab. Honestly, I can't believe that Toyota even offers an automatic transmission.

I owned a '85 manual toyota truck, it had the same 1st to 2nd big jump. I think toyota likes it like that for their trucks.

btw, 5speed here, and love mine. Though the loud throw-out bearing in 2nd is a bit silly for a trany that's been around longer than most posters' age.

I have been driving my 09 for about 2 weeks now and have got the nac of letting off the gas just before the shift and it seems to be working fine. The 6 speed is also nice except for the revs hanging makes me sound like a nub driver sometimes when I don't pay attention and I've driven a manual all my life (16yrs). I don't think it bothered me enough to take the truck back though.

I loved the manual in my 02...but cannot stand it in my 09. I don't think there is anything mechanically wrong I just don't like the feel for some reason. Hate to lose money on the truck but I'm just not happy with it right now. Talking to the dealer now about taking it in for a 10. Damnit....

Ive had my 6 speed 09 for 4 months now and its been great.I only noticed that when you shift you have to give it half a second to get in the next gear to have good pick up.Ive learned to like it that way since its not gonna have the smoothest feel since its a truck.

i have an 09 DC 6 speed.....that shifting between gears and the rpm's still remaining with the clutch in, is part of the emission system as well as apart of another system that aims to help out the people who "think they can drive standard" it keeps the RPMS high so that after changing gears, the people who dont get right back into the throttle don't get jolted... ALSO you should spend the $150 on the URD Short throw shifter, it makes it way more accurate

I test drove a 4x4 access cab 2.7L here in cali and the 5 speed was super clunky, hard to get into 2nd or 3rd and it was worse downshifting into second or 3rd. I bit the bullet and bought a reg cab 4cyl in ny and had it shipped to cali (reg 4x4s reaaaalllllyyy rare in socoal) I got it off the truck and same shit clunky tranny. after 1000 miles on it, its smooth as silk. :notsure:

Wait, if your moving forward even going real slow you wont be able to get it into reverse.

If your moving in reverse it can be tough to get into reverse because its not syncronized. give the gas a blip before you shift to match engine and tranny speeds if your rolling backwards...

I noticed that when I lived in San Diego. Socal dealers won't even order you a reg cab 4x4. They expect you to upgrade to the access cab plus TRD for 9-10k more. Weird stuff.

Yeah they told me they didnt make a 4x4 reg cab anymore. And they showed me by trying to build one online. I changed the zip code to my ny addy and showed them theyre retarded and they said well we can order you one. All in all they wanted 24,000 for a 4x4 reg base delivered. I got the reg cab base(plus) comes with rear sliding window and a couple other things for 18,900 in ny and 1000 to ship it

I've not had really any complaints with mine. It shifts a lot smoother than other trucks I have driven, but not as smooth as some of the cars I've had. I usually shift a bit over 2.5k rpms. I do notice that the rpms go up a bit when I clutch in. I heel toe my down shifts unless it will be at less than 2.5k rpms. I have my seat far enough forward that I can easily mash the clutch pedal all the way to the floor (I'm 6"1 and the seat is no where near all the way back). I have a bit of a vibration at times in 5th gear while accelerating, but nothing bothersome. I can only hear it if the radio is off.

I bought my 07 new and will admit the tranny has a learning curve, but other than that it is great. If your not used to truck standards I can see how it would be frustrating or a truck at all for that matter. If your towing a max load with the truck your need a steep 1st to get the ball rolling so to speak. After awhile you learn how to roll out of first smoothly
