Official 2017 NCAA Football thread

ONLY Notre Dame was allowed into championship consideration if they made it into the top 12 - if I recall - under the BCS rules or was that under the current set up???? I think that was Mantei Tao's (ssp?) senior year.

OR, was it they were GUARANTEED a New Years Bowl game if they made the top 12??? Old age is getting to me! It was something like that.

Regardless, NO OTHER team had that deal, just Notre Dame!!!!

 

I guess we can 'blame' Arkansas for all the conference re-alignments. They bolted the old Southwest Conference - they were the only non-Texas based school in it anyway - for the Southeastern Conference. Then, the SWC started to collapse and teams went to other conferences. Penn State joins the Big Ten. Then everything gets wacked.....Big East collapses - West Virginia to the Big 12, Pitt and Syracuse to the ACC. Nebraska to the Big 10. Texas A&M to SEC. Historic rivalries are gone for several teams - I'm sure there are more.

The good old days - Thanksgiving weekend rivalry games:

Army - Navy
USC - UCLA
OSU - Michigan
Auburn - Alabama
Florida - Florida State

Pitt - Penn State Gone
Oklahoma - Nebraska Gone
Texas - Texas A&M Gone

Are there more that no longer exist???

 

Hey, I used to root for Notre Dame when I was a kid - Terry Hanratty era. Also when their hoops team stopped UCLA's 80 +/- game winning streak - John Shumate hits the game winner, I think?

Again, back before conference realignment and lots of independents!!

 

Not saying it's great, but I like this idea somewhat. It does have it's flaws, but I like that by earning the #1 slot, you get a bye week.

 

I agree in the past that ND got preferential treatment based on past success. That is not the case now nor has it been for a while. It is actually harder for ND to make it in the playoffs than other schools in conferences. They have to play a harder schedule and win just about all their games. I personally think ND should have joined the B1G. They have decent rivalries against big blue and sparty and it is just a better fit than Nebraska, or Rutgers or even Maryland.

 

The natty should be on Sat night. The same for NCCAM. At least for the working class. But it's all about the money and the weekend buildup to the actual game. The superbowl is the same way.

I don't disagree, but it ain't gonna happen. I get a double whammy as my wife's birthday is New Year's Day, so I have to DVR most of the games.

I think ND still gets a bit of preferential treatment. Not near what it used to be, but it is still there. Maybe not preferential treatment, but they are ranked and kind of expected to be contenders every year, when they really havent shown that they are in recent past.

They should just join the B1G. Great fit for style and location. Plus, they'd be the "Stanford of the B1G".

Baker had over 350 total yards and 3 touchdowns that game, if thats a bad game for him holy frick.

 

ESPN predicts SEC will only go 3-6 in bowl games. LSU is one of the 3, so I hope it's correct!

UCF scares me. Obviously we are the better team and will destroy them but Gus never has his teams ready in games like that, just look at the SEC Championship game
