The fighting mushrooms and Seminoles have completely crashed and burned though since

    Point stands, recruiting is important

I dont care about it and rarely follow much of it, but it is important

I’m just happy about it because it’s more football.

Dude... I posted that last night on the seat of my pants... just wrote the ones that immediately came to mind. Sorry if I caused a little butthurt by leaving them out.

Point I was making is a great coach can foster great talent from anybody. The recruiting system as it is is way too overrated and done to strike up drama and ratings for the big sports networks.

I revert my arguement back to Boise State from 2006... they had a bunch of nobodys and commenced to beating the brakes off OKLA... and I feel could have very easily beaten us or tOSU if given the chance.

Recruiting is important in this aspect: you need a player that is willing to sell themselves 110% into the coaches philosophy and have the never ceasing will to win. Talent can be learnt.

This lol. Everyone can beat anyone at any time. If it happens to be the one time you matchup and everything goes right for you, that doesn’t mean you can keep doing it. Recruiting matters. Coaching matters. But I’d honestly say raw talent and just natural skilled players at certain positions means more. Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson are two perfect examples of players that made their teams competitive and relevant and had shit for coaches.

Bobby Petrino was widely considered to be a VERY good coach until he ruined his career on a motorcycle with a staffer. He had it going again there but he’s just a huge piece of shit and a few good seasons can’t escape that past.

Gus will never be good enough for Auburn. Not sure why :anonymous:

Gotta start somewhere. That program was a disaster before he got back there.

There is 2 sides to that coin as well... just like a great coach can make a star out of a mediocre player... so can a great player make a star out of a mediocre coach.

And I'd go for the big game thing if he hadn't kept that team relevant for so long... then went to UDub and had success there as well.

Just think about it this way... how did that 4-5 star recruit become such a great talent?! Probably had a brilliant coach as a mentor.

    How do you figure?

Seems pretty simple to me... you're not born with football talent... someone has to teach you... the better teachers make the better players.

I sucked as a WR in my peewee days... my middle school coach saw I had heart and took the time to teach me the FS position. Turns out with proper coaching and motivation I could be a good player...

Unfortunately... my high school coach wasnt as motivating and I got lazy hence started sucking again.

My beef is the attention paid to the recruiting process like a bunch of talented players make a great team. I have to hear it every year and it bugs me to no end.

Coaches make all the difference. 2007 Michigan for instance... I dont know the exact figures but I know being a prominent school had to have great talent on that team... they lost to an FCS school for chrissakes.

The signing day is just a way to give ESPN a ratings boost on an otherwise slow sports week.

Any team can beat anyone else on a given Saturday. Every team can have an off day. App st, Georgia st, Boise st, UCF, etc. Good for them. Doesn’t mean they’re an elite team, though. Look at the teams vying for playoff spots year after year, then look at their recruiting rankings.

I would say coaching will make a difference with the elite teams. A great coach (Saban, Myer, Dabo) can take a top 5-10 class and compete for a title. A good coach (Richt, Gus) can take a top 5-10 class and win 10 Games a year.

Of course, when you’re competing for titles, it’s gonna be easier to recruit. Then the great coaches get the best players and the good coaches get good players.

National recruiting ranks of the last decade’s national champions:
    LSU 2019: 5th
    Clemson 2018: 6th
    Bama 2017: 1st
    Clemson 2016: 10th
    Bama 2015: 1st
    OSU 2014: 3rd
    FSU 2013: 11th
    bama 2012: 1st
    Bama 2011: 1st
    Auburn 2010: 6th

I think you get the point
