Official 2023 NCAA Football Thread

Been waiting to see the P12 die and won’t believe it if current members sign a lesser deal that is based on incentives.

 

This conference realignment shit is going to ruin what we’ve known as college football for so long. At least for a little while. I think theyll end up going more regional in the future.
I assume the PAC and ACC will end up grabbing some G5 teams in an attempt to survive.

We know the CFP is going to 12 teams (which is so, so stupid) next year - how many you think they'll have to expand to if there are only 2 or 3 huge conferences? It’ll end up like March madness and youll have 5 loss teams making it to the playoffs (ruining the best regular season in sports - even more so than what they’re already doing by expanding to 12).

 

Blame ESPN. They started this with the dismantling of the Big East when they sent a few teams to the ACC (the first time). I’m all for ESPN eating shit on their bottom line with these insane media deals after what they did to traditional rivalries.

Expanding the field is awesome. It’s more football. You’re not going to see a 5-loss team make it (often), let alone win. There is no parity at the top now that paying players is legal.

 

There have been 14 different teams make the playoffs in the 9 years it’s been around. Expanding from 4 to 12 teams waters down the regular season and makes losses insignificant. You won’t see a 5 loss team make the 12 team playoff, but I’ll be money you can lost 3 (25% of your games) and still make it. Youll see 4 and 5 loss teams making it in the future when they expand to make up for this sorry idea of conference realignment.

 

The remaining 4 members of the former PAC 12 heading to the Mountain West?

 

Will the MWC take them? They sure as hell can't leave to join the remains of the PAC.

 

I cannot see Cal and Stanford joining the MW. They will shutter their AD's before that.
OSU and WSU might have no other choice, barring an invite by the B12.

Utah Utes fan here. I’m not happy with the imploding of the PAC 12 this past year. I’m biting my nails waiting to see if we get in a decent conference in the next 48 hours. The PAC 12 was mismanaged by the former and current commissioner.

 

Pac10/12 smelled their own farts for years..and loved the fragrance. You guys will be fine in the B12. It does kinda suck for Wazzu and the Beavs, but they will find a home soon enough.

It's all but a formality. I too will miss going to some venues. I live 10 miles from OSU, so that was an easy one. 40 miles from Eugene. Martin Stadium in Pullman was a whack palace however.
Truth is, a lot of the PAC didnt care bout football enough to fill their stadiums. Which led to dwindling media deals. Of course the true villians of the PAC's demise are USC. They started this with their Baltimore Colts-esque escape last year.

 

It feels so good to not be in the conference getting dismantled for a change.

 

It will be a few years but I believe the next big conference moves will be cutting the weak teams out. Teams like Indiana Vandy, and WVU will be sent packing for not pulling their share for the revenue splits. With the expanded playoffs losses won’t mater as much so the guaranteed wins won’t be needed in a conference any more.

 

Worry about getting 6 wins in the SEC. We’re a basketball school until NB is fired.

 

Your assessment is a little dramatic, as always. Considering there were only 3 teams that finished the year with 3 or more losses in the top 12 and that was after bowl season. SEC people are pretty much the only ones that ever whine about the expanded playoff. Something seen as WAY overdue by most. Even Division II runs a true playoff. Only they use 24 teams.

 

Vandy will never get cut. The SEC, if I’m not mistaken, is the only conference to share the wealth around the conference. Vandy provides massive benefit in baseball and other sports not to mention academics.

there is a reason the SEC is the best conference, and it’s not just football and Alabama/Georgia.

 

SEC is best in football and media rights, and very good in baseball. Baseball doesn’t drive media rights, though. If basketball viewership isn’t released for media rights and it’s HUGE, baseball isn’t even a thought except for those with vested interest in their school / die hard fans.

No school is getting pushed out of a conference. You’re just left behind in temporary realignment, and eventually ESPN and Fox are going to be so tired of overpaying that they’ll just have one pot for a super conference that isn’t ran by the NCAA and mirrors NFL structure.
