Are you sure you have it set up right? I can't see how the threaded plate could pop off the threaded rod? take a picture of your set up

Screw it on before before sticking it in the diff to see if it's stripped.

Re-tapped and pulled. All is well.

Edit: Not sure what happened. Maybe nicked the first 2 threads when I punched it in. Tap went in smooth then bolt threaded on fine right after... :notsure:

Any tips on removing the axle assembly from the differential? I tried the slide hammer but didn't have a hose clamp so couldn't keep the claw engaged. Tried prying at the mating surfaces also, but to no avail. I'm sure I'm being too gentle and need to just muscle up a bit. I intend to pick up a couple hose clamps on my way home and give the slide hammer another try. But let me know if you guys have any additional tips or if it's just a matter of more force.

Get a heavy crow bar that won't flex and a 5 pound shock hammer. Brute force and swear a lot. That's how I got mine off.

Ditto. Had a 2 foot pry bar and just pushed until it popped out. Came first try, it'll come with enough force.

Big heavy pry bar. Work your way around and it will pop off. Don't be as gentle as you want to be.

Update 7/20/2015: Drove approximately 900 highway miles. No issues; only wished I had done this sooner. Definitely have been enjoying the quiet vibe free ride at city streets. I have just re-installed the top plate spacer (5100+885) which puts me back to 3" lift and no issues at all; smooth quiet vibe free ride. Big Smiles!
Alignment and new tires this Thursday. Bigger Smiles.

Rotate the axle 1/4 turn then pry; repeat. There is a sweet spot where the CV axle just pops out. I used a 32" Pry bar and was pushing(not kicking) with my foot. TYhe trick is to rotate the axle and pry, rotate and pry, I also lifted the inner CV axle so that it was centered and clunk it just popped out without much effort. It came out on the third try.

Thanks guys. I was able to get the axle out with a few strategic prys. Like you said, gets to a spot and finally just pops. I used the ECGS removal tool to remove the needle bearing. After that, I quit for the evening. Tomorrow's tasks are to remove the old seal, install the ECGS bushing, and then start putting things back together.

I ended up not installing my bushing, rather I installed a new clamshell from ECGS with an ARB locker in it. I need to post the tool and bushing up for sale when I get home.

But I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who struggled with the CV. My passenger side popped right out, but I spent hours on the drivers side. Different pry bars, hammers, lots of cursing! Finally I went to harbor freight and got a thin 24" pry bar with a big handle and it magically popped out. I think every front diff has worked that way for me. One side is easy, the other side causes hell until it just slides out like nothing. Frustrating to say the least.

What's the best way to pop the CV Axles off then? Pry Bar? Slide Hammer? Have all of the above readily available?

Slide hammer and big hose clamp. I used a steal cable and 5 lb hammer and hose clamp and that worked great.

Replaceing the bearing with the bushing is not as bad as it might sound. And that smooth ride feeling. Priceless

Well the dealer is going to repair under warranty. They are going to replace the needle bearing. But this could be a temporary solution. Once the trucks warranty has expired I will have the bushing installed. Only if it acts up again. I don't think the dealer would want to put a third party part in under the manafacturer warranty. Although this dealer is very good and is all about service. They sell leveling kits and lift kits as a dealer option and honor the manafacturer warranty.

You should mention it since ECGS claims there biggest costumer is Toyota dealers. Yours might not, but some others have.
