Why put it in the freezer?

So the freezer will cause the bushing to shrink a little and make it easier to press it into the diff. Since it's kind of awkward to swing a mallet it only takes a few taps. I've done this on both my Tacomas, second I put it in the freezer, 3 good taps and was in place. First truck I fiddle fucked with it for almost an hour just to get the bushing in place

I'm in need of the puller as well. I'm sure I could make it work with the autozone rental tools but this seems like a job where having the purpose designed tool is a good idea.

No worries man! Yeah it's a trick I picked up working with bearings and stuff. Either heat or cold depending what you are trying to press in or on.

I used this puller https://www.jakewilson.com/p/4870/27118/Tusk-Bearing-Remover-Collet?term=collet instead of the ECGS tool. I didnt use it with a slide hammer, I just forced a 1/2" bolt into it and used a piece of angle iron with a hole drilled in it as a bridge. Insert thhe collet into the bearing, hold the large hex portion, and tighten the small nut until the collet expands into the bearing, just snugly. Then pull the collet until it is against the bottom of the bearing, and tighten it a little more. Then draw the bearing out using a nut on the 1/2" bolt through the angle iron.
Ill post a pic if anyone wants to see it.

Snagged one earlier this week, thanks though.

Currently getting my ass kicked by the cv axle. It refuses to come out of the diff no matter how hard I pry, hammer, rotate 1/6 turns, etc. On the way to the store for a bigger pry bar right now. Watching all the videos of other folks just pulling the axle out seriously lowered my expectations of how long this job would take.

Edit: Finally got the axle out with a big ass prybar. Pulled the needle bearing without too much hassle and found it had a small section (about 1") of the edge lip missing. I figure I'll run the current gear oil for a few more miles to let the diff chew that up and then drain/refill with the recommended Lucas gear oil. I drove a few miles and didn't notice the rumble so hopefully that problem is gone. Looks like the new axle seal I put on might be leaking though. Need to clean everything up with mineral spirits in the morning and then go for a drive to check for anything fresh. Not looking forward to doing all that work again for a new seal.

This one was $15.99 + shipping and less fiddly than the ECGS puller.....link is above....heres a pic of it....I used a long 1/2" bolt and a hunk of scrap angle iron....

    :(

Installed 5100's at 1.75" in the front with 1.5" AAL in the back on my 21k mile 2015 and......

I got the rumble vibe at 30 - 40 mph.

    :(

Did you installed a carrier drop? Does it go away when you go into 4x4? That is how I found out my needle bearing was shot.

    No carrier drop.
    Goes away in 4H
    Comes back in 2H
Happens when I start out to work in the AM and it's pretty much gone when I get off the highway 10 or 15 mins later.

Appointment at dealer 7:30am on Thursday.
I'll drop it off the night before so it's cold when they drive it.

The same shit everyone else has.
SHould be able to replace the seal in under an hour. See the thread I recently made for more info on the seal. Make sure its face the right way and isnt driven in too deep.

It's good, ended up being some residual oil in the area. I degreased it and have driven about 150 miles so far and it's dry. For whatever reason the axle is a pain to get in and out compared to what I've read on here and the YouTube videos I found.

I'm hoping they'll fix it which will buy me some time. I'll gather the parts/supplies to do the ECGS bushing later. I'll go back to stock if I need too. I'll just be kind of bummed.

Are people having long-term luck with the ECGS bushing and keeping under 2" lift?

Good to hear. I used a big metal wedge to slide in between the axle and the diff housing. Stuck it in and gave it a little twist, popped the axle right out. I fought with it the first time until I figured this way out.
