I took my truck in to ECGS yesterday and let Chase install the 8" clamshell bushing for me since I am local. Smooth as silk now! Thanks Chase! and ECGS for coming up with an affordable solution for everyone who is running lift.

What's the 8" clamshell bushing? Is it different from the poly bushing everyone in this thread is talking about and/or installed?

$165. $60 for the bushing plus tax and $100 labor. He didn't have to replace seal. I didn't think that wasn't too bad. If I did it myself I would have had to buy tool plus my time. It was a good deal in my opinion.

How do you know if the seal needs to be replaced? (I'll be doing this mod shortly.)

Thats a smokin deal. I'd pay Chase more than that cause you know it's going to be done right. Damn it's just a little too far out of the way for me. I've pretty much gotten used to the vibe hardly notice it but I'll get to this soon or go ARB?? Thanks

Is there fluid leaking from where the axle goes into the diff? If not, no need to replace. Just be sure when removing and installing the axle and bushing that you don't damage the seal. Mine was fine, but still replaced it because I didn't trust that I wouldn't damage it throughout the process.

Chuncks of needle bearing floating around your diff, excessive wear on cv axle, eventual failure of your bearing leading to axle shaft riding on bare metal. Though some have reported that it takes a while for this to happen, I still wouldn't risk it.

What's the deal with the c-clip you folks are referring to when pulling the cv? When I hear c-clip I think of Fords 8.8 where you need to open the diff to install. How is the Toyota different? I can't visualize it.

Spring clip, shaped like a C, to hold CV axle in place. It sits in a small groove on the cv axle splines, when it is inside the diff, there is another matching groove there that it springs into, to keep the cv from thrusting in or out.

So you just yank the cv with a slde hammer popping the clip out of the groove and pound it back in when reinstalling, in hopes that the clip jumps back into the groove? Correct? Is there a risk of snapping the clip?

Like Anthony said, you can have a spare handy upon re insertion. Mine was pretty mangled when I put it back in, but it still worked. I popped my cv out with a screw driver and a big pry bar, and popped it back in with a hammer and a block of wood. The block of wood protected the cv from the hammer. A second person is helpful to have around to help with that third hand we all need.

Just a quick question. Which side of the bushing should be facing out towards the driver's side wheel. I can't tell on ECGS video. I assumed the top image was the side facing out and the bottom image is the side that is inserted into the diff.

    Thanks

There's not enough bandwidth for what's happening.
I installed the bushing yesterday. I didn't realize how accustomed to the drone / vibe I had become until it was gone.

I would suggest getting the removal tool. I used a pilot bearing puller and slide hammer ... it came out but not without a fight and mangling the bearing to all hell.
