I have a toyota dealership in the area that will put in parts that I bring them. They gave me the whole "this will void your warranty" speech.. I just laughed. just turned 71,000 miles, and I have to replace wheel bearings, and a crap bearing coming out of the diff... wonder if they will make me pay the tech to sit down and watch the video on how to use the bearing removal tool from Chase? Forgot to re-ask you guys...will I need an alignment after this work?

Cool, good luck! I hope it works, because we sound like we have the exact same problem! I have no play in my wheels either and noise doesn't stop when turning one way either. I am starting to think it may be the wheel bearings even though the mechanic said they were fine.

Also, like he said, no alignment needed. I have heard, I have never had experience with it, but your wheel bearings can wear oddly to were the wheel won't have play, but when you actually spin the wheel you get a small hang or noise while spinning. But that would make me think it would make the noise no matter what speed.

Only time you would need to align is when you change the way the vehicle sits(lift or drop), or you hit a curb too hard and knock the alignment out. The wheel bearings don't necessarily have any play in them if they are bad. I just checked mine for play, none, but when I spin the wheels, I hear a loud, what seems like break drag, noise on the driver side, and passenger side is much quieter. So I said eff it and replace both sides. I pull the driver side bearing apart, and it was toast, again, zero play in the wheel. The passenger side bearings were nice and shiny compared to the driver side, which was black and brown tinge on the race and bearings. Pretty quick n easy job if you got the right tools.

I agree, I was thinking of trying a floor jack, bench vise, and a piece of rebar from the part to the ceiling joist in the garage... Or just pay napa $20. :)

Hey I just have a question for you guys who have seen the bearing removal tool. How thick is the material of the piece on the end of the puller that goes in behind the bearing to pull it out. Im just in the process of making one , was gonna use 1\8 thick aluminum, thats not too thick is it?

^^ My advice to you is give up early on trying to make the insert part of the tool, the part that reaches on the backside of the needle bearing, out of aluminum. I have pulled two of the needle bearings now using the ECGS tool. Their tool is made of pretty tough steel. Even with the ECGS tool I ended up bending the ears on the tool because one of the needle bearings was in so tight.

Same here, my puller has been used and abused. Even with the end being steel, it broke. Aluminum that thin will just bend and be worthless. But, easiest way to make the tool end with the right dimensions is to get the bushing and measure for yourself so you have a solid reference.

i have the bushing and can make the piece the right size OD, i now realize aluminum is a shitty idea and im gonna use steel, my question is the thickness. is the ECG tool made from 1\8 steel plate,im worried about the thickness. thanks, im in canada and i cant get the tool in time, want to do it this weekend in my buddies shop on his lift.

total thickness looks like 1/4" and the ears look like 1/8"

Has anyone had the diff output bearing go, on a non-lifted truck? Maybe I should just start with the bearings.. Doesn't go away in 4 hi... Hmmm

If it doesn't go away in 4Hi, then it isn't the front diff.

07 Tacoma SR5 lots of goodies finally
K&N filters, 3" front lift toytec, aal with spacer in rear, bull bar, 4" tube steps, ecgs bushing successful!

Just shake the cv shaft... If it shakes at the diff, guess what, it's the diff.

My truck is a bone stock sr5 with 110k miles. I bought the Toyota gold extended warranty thinking I was covered to 125k. Turns out the mileage was limited... A year ago, they told me nothing was wrong with my truck. I bring it back 2 weeks ago, they say I need a new diff... Exact same sound from a year ago, only this time, I'm out of my warranty!!!

It's the bearing. My truck makes the noise no matter what gear or 4wheel pattern I'm in. I can shake the cv shaft up and down almost 1/4 inch at the diff. Wheel bearings check out fine, cv shafts are in good shape.

Going to swap out for bushing soon...

    John

You're the first person (I think) in the last few years that had the problem even in 4hi. Good to know.

I was really hoping I wouldn't encounter any of these problems when I finally did my lift. Should've known better. Got the vibes everyone else has been living with. ECGS bushing, here I come! Anyone know if this also gets rid of the steering wheel shake at 50-60 mph? Also, I need a puller if anyone has one. Thanks

I just dropped mine off at dealer today. Carrier cut loose and took front drivers driveshaft with it. Still have 3000 miles left on warranty.
