My stock rims are a bit rusted, anyone think I should get the rims powder coated (~280$ cad) or should I pick up a new set

Run 'em as is, and keep an eye out/look into aftermarket sets, IMHO. Once rust gets hold on the OEM rims, it's a matter of progression with salt use on our CDN roads. Your rims are now ~8 years old - mine were showing corrosion after 4. Unless they are slow-leaking at the bead due to corrosion, i would suggest that leaving alone for now, might be the better option.

Before going to the trouble and expense of having the OEM rims media blasted and powder coated, explore what your future options are, related to what you want to do with the truck in both function and appearance. The OEM rim sizing is limited, in tire upgradability options.

    JMHO..

Yea I was kinda thinking it might be just better to get new rims, and maybe keep those as a spare set or something. I was looking at these lately http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/wheels/pdp/ion-alloy-style-71-wheel-with-machined-finish-1417373p.html Cant afford nothing too crazy cause I'm a student right now but I don't like rusty rims that's for sure lol. Basically my plans for the summer is better looking rims, a bull bar, and a toneau cover (maybe) all in all the mods should be around 1500$

At the 4 year mark, more or less, my 2010's OEM Dunflop's were starting to fail badly, and the rims were getting a bit crispy on the coating edging. At that point, I needed an emergency tire change, and scouted out kijiji.ca for an interim tire/rim package. I planned on keeping the OEM rims around to mount a set of snows, but ended up just giving them away 2 years later, to make space in the garage.

The rims that i obtained, are from http://www.rtxwheels.com/ They are Canadian-based, and have a heavy Canadian distribution channel in Canada - my 5-spokes aren't the only machined pattern that they have. Mine were close enough to OEM offset/BS figures, that i'm able to run a much larger (taller) tire setup, with the budget lift/level kit without complications.

My lease take-off set of RTX's found on kijiji with 3/4 tread remaining (225/75R16 at the time) was significantly less than a new tire/rim package. Seller was literally around the corner from me also.. i don't know where you are in Canada, but if you are still a 'down-home' "Newfiebruh" (my family is originally from Clarenville) kijiji might not produce anything local in that option..

I understand the student budget part .. depending on how long you are a student for, the better option might be to evaluate how long you plan on owning the truck, after you graduate..

yeah I tried kijiji but the rims being sold are typically really rough, I live in st. johns, and I have about a year left to my degree. I'm planning on keeping the truck for a minimum of 5 more years give or take. If they still solid the 5lug id get another new one down the road.. but they killed them off and the new tacos don't look too good at all imo.

Agreed .. the 3rd gen appearance-wise is a little off-putting to me also. Toyota killed off the 5-lug for parts-channel cost-savings purposes, and the SR (feature delete package) took it's place as the 'basic' parts/utility truck.. the MSRP is now also much higher, as a result.

The fact that they're sticking the 2.7L on the big 4wd frame is just not the greatest idea either. I get they're trying to save costs and most truck users MUST have the biggest and tallest truck (pi**ing contest) but its just dumb. The msrp for the base taco is like ~31000 here, which can actually get you a Nissan frontier pro 4x near the same cost. Boggles me honestly.

Fully agreed. Mine cost me $21k new, off the lot. All mods into mine, in.. i'm still well below that $31k. Even given inflation - and a well paying job, i couldn't justify $31k on an underpowered stripper truck now.

Which is why mine is a long-term keeper.

Yeah id like to keep mine as long as possible, but the issues with rust here is insane. I had a 07 ranger that has been in the family for about 5 years and I wanted to use that thing till the engine blew (was a regular cab 2wd stripper) but rust came in fast, the bed rails started to give out, the rear bumper got to the point where you would step on it and it would crunch and rust would fall out, the door sills were rotted (I fixed it up before I decided it was time for a new truck). It was near impossible to keep up with it, and it was sad because it only had 190k on it and ran like new :/

Superior Rust Proofing, or Krown Rust Control on an annual basis, is the best innoculation against corrosion in our salt/slurry road environment. I usually coat annually, just before the temperature dives in November, and the use of salt on the roads to cut down on icing, starts.

Preventative maintenance, with our known frame corrosion issue, is a must.

Yep right after I got the truck I found out about the frame recall for 2005-2010 tacomas, I thought ok that's no big deal if theres frame rot ill get that covered. But in Canada we have a different recall only from 2005-2008, which is absolute bs because they're the same trucks, just Toyota screwing Canada lol. So I took it to krown and got it desalted and coated. Hoping for the best

Coat your frame with oil. All the old farmers round here swear by it.
