I mostly just browsed the threads, never interacted. I like not being banned. lawl....

There are literally dozens of threads in multiple sections across the forum purely about the rear diff of a 3rd gen. They were swarming the main page for the longest time and that's where I saw them. Damn click bait I tell ya :annoyed:

Yeah I've been trying to call this morning for an update on what the deal is so far

They got it Wednesday morning so I at least want to know what they discovered before they all leave for the weekend

    Good luck man!
You'd prefer they at least start on it today rather than Monday. Almost all the service techs I've known that weren't Bible thumpers like to get down on weekends if they aren't working OT.

I expect that there has at least been a visual inspection
And that's what I'm interested in

They rolled it in to the bay in neutral

It was shaking the whole truck when I pulled up

I don't know about any forum threads, but I understand Toyota de-tuned the FKS for tacoma applications due to reliability issues with the non-LSD rear ends.

Kinda funny to watch them all gather up to push a truck
Kinda like watching an automotive funeral

That's weird then a visual inspection of the diff shouldn't take more than 45 minutes to an hour once it's in the air.

Uhh, the 2GR FKS in the 3rd gen taco can and does make more crank HP and TQ in other applications.

    Gotcha

    Yeah mine is a sport
So it has a LSD (that I normally turn off)
But I feel the main issue with that drivetrain that makes it all trash is the trans from the camery they put on it

I can't imagine they changed the design of the rear diff too much between 2nd and 3rd gen taco's
Other than the drivetrain in front of it causing it to chew itself to shreds

A friend had issues with rear end on his 2017. Dealer has had it since October

Agreed, the first year is generally bad. I bought an '05 Frontier 4wd (first year of the new Frontiers) with 17K. At around 90K I started pouring money into that thing. I put around $7000 before I decided, "No more". At 115K, I traded and got a used '15 Tacoma - here's hoping.

The 3rd gen got fresh stuff unfortunately, smaller and lighter and "more" efficient, although I'm not as familiar with the diffs as I should be.

Yeah that auto trans is tuned very strangely, I'm not a fan.

I *think* the thread might still be pirate and fjc forum. There was definitely some slick ideas being thrown around.
