Gotcha. Yeah, the baofeng is a dual band. So I could set it up for the aprs, put the 144.39 frequency as the top one on the radio display, and the one that people are using on the bottom band, and hear them, but would have to pull the cable out and select the bottom one to talk back?

    Yep.
Or second radio/ antenna dedicated to aprs.

That's actually a question I was going to ask @Lars

What would optimum antenna placement be on the roof if I ran two of the tram mag mounts?

trust me... with a little studying you can easily pass... I think I got a 10/35 the first time I tried... after about 2 hrs, I was able to get my first passing score. after about two days (2-3hrs of actual studying) I was passing the vast majority of the quizzes.

Yep, it took me 3 to pass for first time but then a solid (1 to 1.5 hours) 7 days before I got into 80%'s pretty much every time.

It's all about going through and memorizing the correct answers after taking it. I would look at the wrong ones and hopefully remember the answer. It's always the same 4 answer per question, they might change where it falls (A,B,C,D).

THIS... and honestly... the test has very few "trick" questions... and by trick I mean they look like other... such as:
what is the frequency range for UHF
what is the frequency range for VHF
What is the frequency range for HF

they all three have the same 4 answers... just remember HF, VHF, UHF ascending order
    7 HF 3 to 30 MHz
    8 VHF 30 to 300 MHz
    9 UHF 300 to 3000 MHz
10 SHF 3 to 30 GHz (never heard of SHF... is that STUPID HIGH FREQUENCY?)

So I emailed the guys that did the offroading ham thing a few weeks ago. Heard back from them today.

Good to hear from you. This is link to the Colorado band plans http://www.ccarc.net/wordpress/coordination/

The official 2m simplex call freq is 146.520 and a lot of people use 146.460 as a 4x4 backcountry calling freq.

If you haven’t seen it there is also some ham discussion on our forum as well http://rockymountainoverland.com/forum/index.php

Already had the 2m call and 70cm call in my list and it looks like the 4x4 frequency they recommend is Rising Sun #1

I think I have a pretty good list put together, just need to figure out how we want to organize it.
