That is looking good to me. I don't know why but I'd put the ham stuff on the early channels and frs and gmrs on the later

Thanks. That's exactly the type of input I'm looking for.
It made sense to me at first because that's what I mostly used the radio for... to talk to people who didn't have a cb but had some frs radios or something.
Since this list will be for us to use ham, I was thinking I'd put the RS simplex channels first and then probably the Colorado repeater network after that.
Do you know of any other local repeater networks? By that I mean not just repeaters that are owned by the same club but a network that's all tied together without sending tones to open up relays?

Are any repeaters from UT in there?

    Two moab repeaters.
Stored as moab 1 and moab 2.
Listened to some good ol boy last year telling the old lady when he'd be back from checking out the back 40 or something like that

    Yes.
Front and rear of the roof, Centered. (as far apart as is practical. (38" is ideal, but work with what you've got.)

Second antenna, on a second Beofeng ;)

    This :)

    Yes.
A Note for everyone talking about a dedicated APRS transmitter....

Intermod is a thing. If you're listening on 146.460mhz on your "Phone" radio, and the "APRS" radio transmits on 144.390mhz (the standard 2m APRS Frequency in the US.) you are highly likely to hear it on the "Phone" radio.

If this is a problem while we're on the rimrocker, assuming everyone with us has a dual-band radio, we can switch phone to a 70cm simplex frequency.

Thanks @teamhypoxia for working on that, it's just reminding me on how little I really know.

There are 2 main guys and one knows a bunch about APRS too, he gave presentation at their HAM event last month. I think one's name is Ben but forget the other.

@odomandr do you recall their names?

Is there math that makes 146.46 particularly susceptible to interference from 144.39 or is it just because they're both 2m?

    Yes.
    It's because they're both on 2m.

in my case the APRS transmitter is 10W. The antenna for my 2m/70cm dual band is 34" away on the roof. That's an awful lot of RF at that range.

Think of it like you are in a parking lot, talking to your friend Joe who's about 5 feet away.
Then, every 2-5 minutes Jason yells "Hey Guys!" through a megaphone about 10 feet away from both you and Joe.

The receiver attempts to de-sense itself (think putting your fingers in your ears.) but that makes hearing Joe hard too. So you either hear Jason, or you hear Jason and Joe, or you hear nobody at all.

Thankfully APRS transmissions are short. Usually about a second, and only happen every 120-300 seconds.

So do we need a simplex freq like 160-170 or go UHF?

I'm not personally ready to make a whole lot of accommodations or sacrifices for aprs given the current state of coverage.

    :rofl:love the analogy.
I'm trying to work out how to incorporate the fact that Jason needs a kick in the nuts into our ham discussion.

    Yes.
    160mhz - 170mhz aren't in the ham bands...

The 2 meter band is: 144.000 MHz – 148.000 MHz
If APRS is a problem, and I'm not sure it will be depending on your setups. We can easily move to a 70cm frequency.
