@PS78 and @thefatkid have been studying. They may have a test date in mind.

Also there is a way to set ch A to display call and check B to display frequency. This is helpful when someone without the TW file is out and about

I am still studying too. Oh and with the CHIRP software it's easy to program the other settings on the Beofeng radios while you have it hooked up.

What's the hold up. Don't you have a perfect spot for a radio too?

The radio is installed and powered but no transmissions on it. Just life in the way of studying. I will do it here soon.

I built a file from CHIRP and moved that to the Yaesu programming software and loaded it. But it needs to be updated because I have 1000 CH capabilities so I want to add more of the West onto it.

Andy means keying the mic to see if the repeater responds.
There's a lingo that goes along with HAM that I can't seem to bring myself to use.
Things like "rag chew" and "kerchunk" and "73s"

WTF study guide was that in? :D And the answer to that is no. I still need to throw an SWR meter on it too just to see where I am at. But I am running mag mount on the roof with a 20" dual band antenna. It shouldn't be bad unless the roof rack is somehow interfering.

I missed the last test I wanted to attend because of a Birthday. I'll have to look and see if there are any this weekend.

Yeah until you hear a repeater respond to you mic assume it doesn't work. Many net meetings are only a confirmation that the radio functions

Installed the new Ham antenna and built a quick fold over mount. Now that I've got CB and HAM taken care of.. need to figure out what the next project will be.

    Browning BR-180 antenna
    Browning cable

But I needed a mount. I wanted a fold over one, but was unable to find much online that wasn't crazy expensive.

Thankfully I have a box of random old mounts from stuff, put two together, a little cutting, bending, and grinding and voila!

Cut apart a sway bar mount bushing and zip tied it to the rack temporarily and the top of the antenna sits in there to keep it from rattling against the crossbars when its down.

    Not bad!

I know this isnt a cb thread but i figured you all would know the answer to this.

If i used the below to connect 2 coax would it cause issues with a good signal?

    Never enough
Itll definitely degrade the signal some. Not sure by how much though.

I have never heard or seen Browning ever mentioned in Ham stuff.

Larsen seems to be one of top brands and most frequently mentioned when I look around

Just some HAM info for those of you who might want to listen in and check your equipment.

Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery posted this tonight:

"We are constantly pushing the use of Ham Radio in not only our Organization, but that of the 4x4 community as well. We would like to see the entire OHV Community utilize this great form of communication while enjoying the backcountry.

With that we are excited to announce we are beginning a Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery Ham Net on Saturday Evenings starting on Saturday May 27th at 7:00 pm. We have teamed up with the Rocky Mountain Radio League who has granted us permission to use their 145.340 repeater that is located on top of Squa Mountain. This repeater uses a - offset shift, a tone of 103.5 hz and is also accessible via IRLP (Node #3350) or Echolink (gateway #819116).

Our hope that is through this Net we will give our Members a way to test equipment, get on the air, as well as talk about the weekly topic. This will be just another way we will work on educating our members and public about the need to be prepared when traveling in the backcountry.

We ask that you PLEASE visit Rocky Mountain Radio Leagues website at and check them out, as well as consider becoming a member with them to help them with their mission and cause."

    This link works... http://www.rmrl.org/

What the heck is their "mission/ cause"

    Edit: found under membership

Membership fluctuates around 250. Activities include furnishing communications coverage for civic events, emergencies, and a severe storm-warning network to assisting the National Weather Service.

What mounted units are people running?

Debating on going with a hard mounted unit to gain APRS without running a second radio/antenna.

This didn't mention APRS, is it a feature that's usually mentioned?
