Spotted: 11:15pm. I25 near Arapahoe. Two people on a motor scooter. Maybe a Vespa.

Impressive that you were able to do 50+mph, but that's still far too slow for that highway at that time of night.

I'm not sure if they were actually breaking any law. Maybe minimum speed, but I think they were just fast enough.

Maybe motor scooter-specific laws? I don't know those.

I feel like there's a law that they need plates and a motorcycle license when they're over 50cc but I wouldn't imagine they'd have them. There's a group of folks building pretty suped up minibikes around Denver and GPS clocking like 80+ mphs. It's pretty amazing.

In 1990-1992 two of my best friends had Yamaha YSR50s and I had a CB1100F. We went everywhere and I never got out of 1st gear.

MEMORY WAS WRONG. See later post.

State law doesn’t matter. Federal interstates require a 250cc minimum engine size. No matter how fast your souped up Grom can go, you’re not allowed.

Can you point to a source for this? I spent a few minutes searching and only came up with forum posts and Q&A sites--nothing authoritative.

Even the forum posts were split between 50cc and 125-150cc as the minimum allowed, although some did recommend 250cc as the minimum safe.

I'll conceded that I didn't look very hard, but I expected a legal requirement would be easy enough to dig up.

I’m going from memory when I got my moto endorsement many years ago…

hm. Seems that it’s the normal federal/state mess of laws where there’s the base federal (>49cc) and then states may override that to be >149cc or more.

so I looked up Colorado at the dmv:

    https://spl.cde.state.co.us/artemis/revserials/rev38m85internet/rev38m852018internet.pdf

    unclear.

this website says scooters (anything less than 50cc) can not be operated on the highway. So it’s unclear.

If the world is going to this I'll just "drive" my '83 It465 to work few days a week, storing mixed gas cans in my office & swapping fouled spark plugs as needed.... guess the real investment will be that BD &/or DD lights be the need... I'll figure out how to power off the magneto... no worries on keeping up with traffic.... it'll do 99 with my fat ass on it

& I'm parking that big bitch widow maker in the empty cube right out side my office door to leak all its 2-stroke goodness on the carpet
