Wheel cylinder. Got it off the trail with a pair of vice grips but had no interest in driving down the mountain that way.

Mine was passenger side too. I tried like heck to find something to plug it with but they’re fine thread and I couldn’t find anything. Had to cut the hard line and pinch it. It’s a free tow to Toyota and I assume a free wheel cylinder but hopefully they’ll understand you got to do what you got to do and not charge me for a new hard line.

Almost did since they need to be longer anyway but I didn’t feel like it would seal as well.

I sent it to Stevinson just cause that’s where I bought it. After the fact, I thought I should have sent it to yours.

I would expect to pay for the brake line then. They shouldn't charge you labor though, as they have to bleed it for the wheel cylinder anyways.

They just called. They are already trying to act like they may not cover it because "I touched it". I told the kid on the phone, to whom I had to explain to 3 times what a wheel cylinder was and I still dont think he got it, that if his boss had any concern whatsoever to have him call me directly. I guess I should have told them the truck was on top of Yankee Hill and they needed to go get it so that I wouldnt have had to "touch it".

You should have had them cover the tow if you're towing it to someone who doesn't understand the dynamics of trail recoveries/repairs. I can't say anymore as this is a public forum.

Well, they called me back and I guess the kid had someone explain to him what a wheel cylinder was. He had a very different tone this time. Even stated that the brake line would most likely be covered if it was something "that was done to get the vehicle safely to the road". The whole thing should wind up costing $0.00. However, if this type of thing were to ever happen again, I will make sure it winds up somewhere there is a person who understands the dynamics of trail recoveries/repairs.

I know how a wheel cylinder brakes, but how does a wheel cylinder break? Just leaks? Does the drum get contaminated?

Yes, it ceases to maintain the fluid inside causing it to leak out instead of pushing the piston out expanding the shoe and thusly rendering all 4 corners of the vehicle, brakeless.
