So I thought I'd post in the DS BS thread. I'm totally addicted to dual sport riding. Had a ktm 250exc with a plate was way more of a offroad ride. Then a buddy talked me into a ktm 450exc and I gotta say it is like cheating. Burns up the road and will shread trails. Can't throw it around like a two stroke but it is so much easier to ride in changing conditions and is great for connecting trails. I missed the two stroke a little though so I bought a ring dinger as a buddy bike. Hardly ever ride it but when I do it feels like riding a mountain bike compared to the 450. I've included a pic of them for your viewing pleasure. Now back to the DR build...

While you're on there, you should go by the classifieds and pick yourself up an XR650R. :D

Sell the DR with the title, "Ran last time I rode it."

A friend of mine had a KX250. We called it the killer KX cause it injured almost everyone who rode it. The original owner sold it cause he crashed it and broke his leg. My friend bought it and his brother looped it and broke his tailbone, another friend tore his ACL. I rode it once and managed to low side it in the woods and had to replace the bars. That bike had a wicked hit but steered like magic and would lull you into thinking everything was going to be good then wham it would come on the pipe and be all wheelspin and front tire in the air. Can't wait for spring to get out for some camping/riding fun. Hope that DR doesn't murder your wallet before you get it dialed.

im pretty sure me and my kx were one:D
run some vp 112 and off we went
dam i lov the smell of that stuff
nothing like a 2 stroke if u ask me
this is my first ever 4 stroke...and i went into this knowing a 4 stroke was going to be allot more work / maint. ect
    oh well...i love my dr--as a commuter
i needs new gearing and some knobbys before i take her into the woods....
these bikes hold their value i will tell you that.....
i have a line on another motor i am looking to pick up and tear it down and build an animal:D
we will see if that happens....
im 90% sure this carb issue is either from sitting or a bad choke "plastic nut stripped at carb....
should be an easy fix.....i am going to tear it off the bike tomm....

Love the smell of race gas mixed with klotz bean oil. I've been behind bikes when racing and didn't want to pass cause it smelled so good! I just rebuilt the motor on the KTM cause it was loosing some of it's snap and had run out of valve adjustment. Too be expected after 12,000 miles. New piston rings and valve job brought it all back. Loved doing the work but it was more $s than the two strokes.

I have been looking at the new ktm 350 exc and the freeride version. One of these is likely to be the next bike. I'm leaning toward the freeride cause of the weight and low seat height. Would probably keep the 450 as a buddy bike and let the little 220 go.

New meat on the DS. It's a pirelli and DOT rated. I have always used michellin s12 on the rear but they are not DOT so always was cheating a little. Put the scorpion pro on the front. Looks just like the michellin s12 front but is DOT as well. Can't wait to get out this spring.

I liked the scorpion pros but am now using the MT43 trials both front and rear. I have used the MT43 rear for awhile and just put on on the front and I like the pavement feel of it better, no dirt/mud time yet. WR250R

You're using a trials tire on the road?

I run MT-21's and they're probably the best 50/50 tire I've run. Though I haven't tried a 909 rear, but I really don't want to spend $200 for one tire...

    Hi Matt,

Yes I'm using the Pirelli MT43 on my WR250R, front and rear on and off road with Tubliss, 6psi rear 10psi front. This is my dirt bike so I'm not doing highway speeds, mostly 35-45 top speed on back roads or roads connecting tail sections.

I've had my 2008 WR250R since Jan of '10. It was a new non-current, paid $4500 out the door (plus tax and tags) put about 1200 miles on it, over 800 at Big Bend National Park in Feb of 2010, and installed an Athena big bore. I have a little over 12K miles on it now with zero problems that were not self inflicted. 14/50 gearing, stock exhaust, stock air box, very quiet. Just had the fork seals replaced as they were leaking. Great bike!

Have you ridden at Sam Houston National Forest? What are the trails like at Big Bend NF? I considered the trials tire but I'm 90% off road and prefer to ride sandy conditions. We'll go camping/riding in Michigan in a few weeks and I'll get a chance to see how much traction I'm giving up for the DOT legal status.

I think a trials tire is a great idea if you're looking for some easier/better traction. I don't think your speed on the road would be an issue unless it's for extended periods. I'm a trials rider and also a member of a very big off road club. We see a lot of dual sport guys with trials tires. Check out the clubs site in my signature.
