Question: Has anybody used their HD2 on permanent power ... like a USB to the cig lighter while driving long distances ?? ..

The reason I asked is I am planning to test this cam on the dash as a full time recorder for all the crazy stuff that happens on the road in front of my Tacoma.

I used the OEM flat stick on mount and mounted it on the smooth part (in the center) of a GPS sand bag mount and it seems great so far. This way of mounting is much lower and more stable than the suction cup mount (facing out windshield & across the hood). With this sand bag mount, this HD2 will sit almost anywhere, even on the seat backs.

I will take some pics later and post them. And when not using it, place it on seat or floor with a baseball hat over it. :D

Again, the question is ... can you keep this HD2 running all the time (while driving) on the USB cord to cig lighter ??

Thanks, because every time I put in USB cable ... it seems to just want to charge and not really function.

PS ... Next gotta find a way to download this stuff and get some good editing software.

I don't have the hero 2 now have ever tried this, but what I would suggest is see if it will work with the USB cord thing with the battery OUT of the go pro. If it works, I would do that as it wouldn't continually charge the battery thus having a potential shortened life. But if it doesn't work I still dont see too much of a problem, maybe run it for a while then plug it in.

Thanks .... and I just tried the H2 with and without battery installed and plugged in to a power source and the "USB Symbol" still comes up and it won't record.

Is there a setting or a way to make the H2 record with power cord powering it (with or without battery installed) ...

EDIT: I was looking at the manual and the manual says this:

    Using the Camera While Charging

You can charge the camera’s battery while recording video or taking photos.
Simply plug the camera into any USB-based wall, car, or phone charger to
charge the HD HERO2 camera while recording video or photos. It is best to use
GoPro’s 1 amp (1000mAh) charger for maximum charging performance while
    the camera is in use.

But, I must be missing something, because it will NOT power on and record with cord attached ...

Man, I love this thing. Have it mounted on a GPS sand bag mount and place it on my dash. ... :D

In just 2 days, I have caught some crazy sh*t on the road. ... even caught a spinout (in front of me) on the freeway ...

So I bought a gopro2 today, to go with my HD. So I can get more angles when I film. Going to try it out this weekend on a 15 truck off road meet. :)

Just curious here ... does anyone have their HD2 hard wired and leave it on for long periods of time (3 hours or more) ??

Using it as a "Dash Cam" (with a 32 GB chip) and the camera gets pretty warm inside the water proof case.

It was a super sunny day today and it could have been the sun warming it up too.

maybe try the back with the holes in it? idk if they are meant to be running for that long. atleast plugged in. i would probably try using the battery as much as you can and then plugging it in when its about to die.

this is just my opinion. the gopro warming up might not even be a problem

When you upload it from iMovie it should give you an option on the resolution.
