Yes you format it after inserting it into the GoPro.

If I remember correctly these should be pretty much the same as the instructions that came with your GoPro.

After inserting the SD Card, power up your GoPro. Take a switch picture mode and a PICTURE. Not video. Then restart your GoPro. This should format your SD Card accordingly.

I am thinking about getting a gopro, just starting to research it now, i really dont have much experience with shooting/editing videos. If you guys have any advise i would appreciate it. I will be using it for wheeling trips, snowboarding, maybe some wakeboarding or skateboarding. I am trying to decide which one to go with. I want good picture quality but i dont think i will use it enough to justify spending the extra money on the black edition. Any pointers or anything i should know before i buy one? Thanks in advance.

If you're not able to write the card, check for a lock switch on the left side of the card. Be sure the switch is in the up position.

You can eliminate the card as the problem by formatting it in something else (like a camera). The format on most camera cards is FAT. This is the same file system Windows uses however, you might experience the same problem when you put the card in the GoPro.

If you know that nothing is written on the card, what you can do is format it again in the GoPro. Enter the settings menu and scroll all the way down to "Delete All". Select that and and "Delete All" should start blinking now press the shutter button again. That will format the card.

    Good luck.

Do you think it's all the hero3's or just the black edition?

I know there has been talk of the freezing issues being related to the Class rating of the SD card. Are you using anything less than a 16gb class 10?

I am using a san disk class 10 pro extreme. I will get the upload and download speeds of the card when I get home.
