The easiest way to tell, if you look at the back under the exhaust there is a little cowl along the bottom of the engine clamshell doors. This is for the longer burner can on the engine.

Thanks! It's been a while since I've last been around choppers. I grew up in a helicopter shop until I was about 16, wish I took more interest in it. I've got so many memories of flying, must've been in the air over 100 times, even had my uncle fly to my school as my show and tell...that was pretty cool.

That does suck.. But sounds about normal, taking advantage of veterans. Can anyone chime in on about what is cost to get your license?

Costs at least $70k to get to your CFI (Certified Flight Instructor) which you will need to start your career!

It really wasn't taking advantage of veterans because it wasn't costing them anything, it was taking advantage of taxpayers!

Damn that's a good chunk of change! Trying to do a little research on the subject now and it doesn't seem like there are a whole lot of places in GA that offer training. Any good websites yall know of listing minimum requirements or other helpful tips?

www.verticalreference.com some good info on there. Check out the forums. It's pricey and you have to want it. It's not an easy ride after you're certified either. It took me around 4 years to get to a good paying job.

Any questions you have I can probably help you out! If it's something you are serious about, get a second class FAA medical first to make sure you can fly commercially. I'd actually get a Class 1 and go from there.

Skootter64, your sig line "helicopter pilots are brooding introspective anticipaters of trouble. They know if something bad has not happened it is about to." Describes my uncle to a T. I worked with him for a couple years and he was ALWAYS looking for the next problem which I am happy rubbed off on me a bit. He flew helicopters in the Navy for 11 years. To this day if you ask him what the biggest mistake of his life was he will tell you it was giving it up.

If you like Helicopters, you've gotta come to San Carlos (SQL) to see the Hiller Aviation Museum and Vertical Challenge helicopter show.

Advrider.com has a great thread, Helicopters R Us. The thread starter and many of the contributors are current pilots-lots of good stuff in that thread. And if all you do is read it for the pictures, that's worth it too. Especially the thread starter's shots (he's worked flying skiers, drilling rigs, coast guard, etc and has posted some cool stuff). Same with Kaumajet-he's been at it for a while and has also posted some cool pics.

My instructor in flight school (4 yrs ago) told us it was roughly 100k for him to get his CFII (double I) but then again that was prob 15 yrs ago for him. That's my only reference, might be dated.

Jeff, I can't take credit for the quote but I find it amusingly true also. I started out flying fixed wing in college and that community is slightly different from the rotary side. Having said that, I like both types of people the same, aviation is aviation and those that try to draw a line b/w one side vs the other need bigger things to worry about (probably including control touch)

Living in the beeline between ORD and downtown, the one fun thing we get when Barry comes to town is the helicopter shows over our backyard. Didn't get too many the last couple days that he's been here - lots of V22 action though. This has been a regular sight in the 'hood this week. Those T406 Rolls/Allisons growl in a way that makes you run out of the house to see what's up.
