you can get a pretty nice yak for about 1k and a little less in the length you want. Are you going to be doing any fishing or anything out of it? If it is for just traveling down the river and such, I would recommend the 11-12' range. Mine is 11 and is prefect for touring the river and if I want to take it to the lake or anything, it is easy to maneuver. The other question is, do you want a sit in or sit on top. The sit on tops can store a lot more things and are a lot more stable, however you get wet a lot more easily. Sit in, you stay a little more dry (makes a big difference even on a pretty warm day), most 11-12' sit in yaks have 1 or 2 dry wells to store gear.

with all that being said, take a look at Wilderness Systems. They have an awesome line of kayaks. As far as sit ins go, check out the Pungo or Pamlico models. Sit on tops, the Tarpon models are awesome.

I can tell you from personal experience with my kayak, make sure you spend the money on a kayak. I really wish I had been a little more patient and saved a few hundred more dollars and gotten a better made boat than this perception I have. You definitely get what you pay for. I will most likely keep my perception sit in to use for the occasional friend that comes along and for cooler weather paddling but am planning on getting one of the Wilderness Systems Tarpon models just for cruising the river like I have been doing a lot of lately.

For a few hundred more, you can get a Prijon Calabria, 14' 6". A stable, straight-tracking, hard chine, sit in kayak. i've had mine about 10 years and love it ! It is great on flat water and allows you to paddle straight without requiring a skeg or a rudder. I have a picture of mine (post 47) on the forum.

Best advice, rent a few before you buy. Learn the different handling characteristics, and see if there is a local Paddlefest scheduled. If so, you can likely try several different boats for free and see demonstrations on technique.

lol That happened to me the first few times as well. I have only had mine on the lake only a handful of times though. You get used to it pretty quick. Glad you are having a good time!
    Looks like a good time!
Yeah man. You don't have to wear one if you are over 18 but you have to have it on board. I just stick mine under the shock cords on the front of my yak. It is there to grab real fast if I need it. just got a cheapo $25 one from Bass Pro that buckles together. It passes the inspections so thats all that I care about.

well... its almost that time to put the yaks up for the cold season. At least here... Probably have about a month or so to get in a few more paddles. School just started back up for me though so theres no telling how much time I will be on the water now. :(

Anybody in Dallas/Ft Worth area can race this weekend in the Trinity River Challenge sponsored by the Dallas Down River Club. 12 mile race starting in Carrollton. Bring your canoes and kayaks, it's a fun event. I'm shooting for the two-hour club...

All you need is a drytop and a spray skirt and you'll be fine! I'll be picking up a drytop in the next couple of weeks. I tell ya, kayaking and camping gear have my wallet empty haha :) Biggest reason my truck isn't modded to the gills yet.

I have a 17' plastic canoe I bought to take wife and kids out, and a couple of composite polo kayaks. Is everyone satisfied with the Thule XSporter? Would it work fine for a 17-footer without hitting the roof of my double-cab? I used to carry it on my Mazda3, but it was longer than the car... I would really like to be able to carry it on the new truck!

    Thanks!

See pg 3, post #43 for a pic of how they rode on the 05 access cab. It'll be a tad different on the 08 reg cab but will still be fine. I'll be able to see the front of them out the top of the windshield from the looks of it.

Nice! What I was thinking of doing is to set the rear bar one notch lower than the front one, so it would be slightly angled up and raised from the roof of the double cab. I always use bow/stern lines anyway, so I'm not afraid of the canoe lifting off, but I am afraid it might catch a lot of wind and be like a giant parachute brake...

Since the newer Tacomas have the full composite bed liner, without the inside lip on the bed rim, how does the Thule attach to the truck?
